Is there a casting number on each trans that tells what version it is? I got a 210 5-spd for my 1200 but I want to be sure that it really is before I get to far into it. I know in VWs it is stamped into a plate on the bottom...do we have the same thing and if so what numbers mean what? Thanks in advance

Chandler

What options are there and what are the differences. I want the lightest strongest 5 spd and was pointed toward the 78 B210 5-spd as the choice.

The 60 series is a factory overdrive 5 spd.
it is either a 60a or 60L. If it is an A then
it is traditional h pattern with 5 above R
on the right hand side. An L has reverse in
the top left corner and is known as a dogleg
The only other lightweight factory 5 spd is the 56a
which is NOT overdrive but has a
1:1 5th gear. Not as strong as a 60, but it is horses
for coarses What engine are you
running etc etc.

Well it is a A12A. I'm figuring 150 or so horsepower based on what some other SCCA guys have out of them. It will be a few months before I get it together but I want to be sure I have the right one so I can mark it off of the list for now!

Both 5-speeds for 210 (B310) are the same strength. The 1979 "60L" has the dogleg shift pattern, and 1980-1982 "60A" has the regular shift pattern.

The rare 56a 5-speed was used behind A12 and A13 racing engines. The horsepower doesn't affect the transmission, it is the torque that does. It is fairly easy to brake a 56-series, the racers treated them gently.

And don't forget the other factory 5-speed: the 63A from the 1976-1978 B210. It's a big heavy gun of a sun. Overkill for an A12/A13, or even for an an A15.

This power figure, is that at the flywheel or the road wheel.

Serious racers over here are managing to get about 120hp at the road wheel from dedicated race engines & the trans of choice seems to be a Toyota unit, because they are bulletproof, available & cheap.

The downside is the price of the adapter kit.

The 63 series trans is the one they used behind the L series engines, but with an A series bellhousing so it's plenty tough & if you are going all out racing, it would be the better choice as far as absolute strength goes.
The 63 series trans was never sold in an A series powered car over here, which propells the choice of the Toyota alternative.

If you're running the A12A I presume that you're keeping it under 1300cc for class racing purposes & this is a good choice as the rods in these use the larger 19mm wrist oin which allows you to use the A14 pistons, giving you a wide choice of bore sizes & capacities.
It's unlikely that you will kill the 63 trans with a 1300 engine, but just remember that with strength, & the resulting reliability, comes weight.
