was having a look at a few a series starters today and noticed that some had 8 teeth and some had 9. I thought all starters were interchangable, so does different ring gear/flywheel size on a12-a15 overcome the extra tooth?? i've never taken any notice of this before, would hate to munch my flywheel!!

All interchangeable as far as I know. I have swapped over many an a-series start motor without any problems ever.

You'll find they are the same size and pitch teeth, so the 9 tooth gear would be larger and offset further away from the flywheel to compensate.

i thought it must be something like that, because i've interchanged a12 and a15 starters as well, just never taken any notice of the number of teeth before. I must have been really bored!!!

* starters for all A-series engines interchange
* starters for automatic vs manual transmission differ

Well the starter motor in my A14 wont fit me A12 and there both 4 speed manuals. The one in my A14 has a notch that wont allow them to go in the A12. The A14 is out of an early pulsar if that makes a difference but i doubt it. We have about 3 0f each. also the A14 ones i have are noticeably bigger.

It's probably because it is a Pulsar (fwd) car. I put the bigger one on my A12.
