$80 start bid on an A14 oval port head. When did that become too expensive? If you ask the bloke to have a look at the head bolt holes and tell you if there is any evidence of the washers sinking nto the head then you'll know if it's soft or not. As for corrosion, I've seen a BA falcon with the head off to get repaired for corrosion. Nearly anything can be fixed.

I just got the head done on the wifes car, had a crack across cyl #1, pressure test, weld, re pressure test, machine cost $250. Not too bad.
