Whats the typical cause of this?

the excuse im telling dattogal (her car just doenst want to stop) is wearing thin....

please help save me from spousal abuse!

actually yeah that would be consistant with the fact that it deosnt start very easily when warm also

Run on or dieseling could be from being too lean, also by timing too advanced or hot spots causing it to fire and keep running.

A later model carby has the ant-diesel solenoid so you can run leaner without running on.

hey mate
depending on the carby
as white sedan said the anti dieseling solenoid maybe inop
but the fact that it doesnt start easily when its warm makes me think its flooding which would prob be from needle and seat not sealing properly, or the floiat height is set wrong, causing the bowl to overflow and run into cylinder when swithced off, or your outlet check valve aint working properly
put a carby kit thru it and check the float height , should fix this

A common cause is idle speed to high: leaking throttle shaft, or incorrect adjustment. These air leaks cause dieseling problem with 1970s cars due to lean mixtures and timing settings -- as emission controlled cars have.
