The carb will help IF the engine is in good mechanical shape. It will NOT restore power lost by low compression or just plain being out of tune. As a baseline reference, give it a full tune up & see how it drives.
If everything in the engine is up to scratch, then go with it. If you have mechanical problems, then fix them first.
