#1 the perfect parts car
Quinn Posted on: 2004/1/10 22:47
I think Ive found the perfect parts car for a 1200. The nissan sunny SGX. It cost me $200 off trademe.com and I thought it was a standard 1400 with a 5 speed but it has the oval port head and the dogbox!! Yay!!
So far Ive swaped the front suspension, bigger and has disk brakes. Ive pulled the motor and box out and the brake M/C. I have also taken the rear anti-tramp bars out (it as a four link rear) and I was wondering if yous fullas might know if theres anything else worth grabing. Air box? steering rack? diff head?
cheers
Quinn

Ignition switch -- everyone once in a while they go bad on the 1200. I think the B310 switch is the same.

You can use the H150 diff in your 1200 housing, was the talk from a few days ago.

almost as good as my 71 1200 sedan with enough panels and parts to build two sedans (including all the badges from both cars), and diffs etc.

id also rather a a14 with 5 speed dog box.

Are you sure it's a dogbox and not just a close ratio 5 speed? I didn't think any of the a-series gearboxes came with dog engaugement as opossed to syncromesh type?
I'd love a close ratio dogbox for my 1200 rally car that'd be awesome!!

thanks on the ignition switch, it has the key so i might take the switch just in case. It is defiantly the dog leg box, reverse is where 1st is and 1st where 2nd is etc. I dont think it is close ratio, i only drove the car about 10 blocks, it had no plates so I didnt give it heeps. The H150 diff head is good, what about the axles, are they the same length as the 1200 ones?
sorry im being lazy I'll go out side and mesure the track width myself, but anyone know if their indentical to the 1200 ones, stonger?
has anyone tried to fit a fan (air box) out of a latter nissan into a 1200? its summer and it would be nice to have some air flow in the car.

I suspect that he means a dogLEG gearbox, still, you never know.

I've got an electric fan installed in my car, it helps heaps to cool the motor down, especially if your idling for any long periods of time... I bought the fan and thermostat attachments for less than $50 from super cheap auto, and then it was only a matter of finding a good spot to mount it. A friend and i mounted it of the original radiator mounts..

Yes Dodgeman I mean DOGLEG gearbox sorry if my abbreviation was to criptic for anyone.
as for datral_10 saying:

dogleg boxes are mecanically different in both the arrangement of the gears and therefore the selector arrangement, whereas short ratio boxes just use different cogs for different ratios. Quite different. I cant find any info on the ratios of the dogbox but i havent realy looked yet so I cant confirm anything.

Quinn, the ignition swith isn't connected to the key. It is just a little electrical switch with two screws holding it on. You are thinking of the ignition lock or whatever that's called, which is bolted to the steering column with two headless bolts (difficult to remove). The switch is bolted to the bottom of this.

Good score Quinn!

the box you've got will be an FS5W60L.
Ratios are
3.513
2.170
1.378
1
.846

I've still got an SGX workshop manual somewhere around if you get stuck for drawings...
