just a question to you datto nutters, i have a few gear boxes kicking around at home all (a series) and i think one is a 5 speed do you fellas have any tips to identify it as a 5 speed, certain numbers or somthing?
would love to find out and put it in my ute cheers

We know how to identify by sight.

Numbers are unknown.

Does the gearbox in question have the number 56, 60 or 63 cast into the side?

You can put a shifter in it and look for 5th.

Many have been fooled by thinking they found fifth. But if you rotate the input shaft by hand, and feel the output shaft you can verify if it indeed has five gears.

Or post photos here of both sides of the transmission.

The 5 speed has a bigger bulge in the extension housing were the 5th gear sits also. Think there are some pics in the tech wiki.
