so would it be unsafe to run aftermarket wheels that don't locate on the hub using the centre hole, but rather just with the studs?
because that seems to be something that almost everyone does. are spacers really much worse?

The size of the centre hole doesnt control how the wheel is attached.
I have been in a car with wheel spacers when the studs let go, (the car in question was owned and driven by someone who swore by them) and apart from the fact that I was still picking threads of car seat cover out of my butt 3 days later, the insurance company knocked the claim back as they were deemed an illegal modification that directly contributed to the car getting written off.

the legal thing was the issue for me as well as saftey. i was on steel chasers, so i just had the offset changed.
