Buy a new unit from a auto parts chain, yes it will cost a bit more but at least you know it has new parts in it and not just a black spray job!

The regulator is more apt to go bad than the alternator -- so test it.

What are the symptoms?

Not charging? If you hot wire the alternator and it increases voltage, then the regulator is bad.

CHG lamp flickering? Could be the brushes need replacing. It's easy to check these.
