Good news. It has an E98 part number (Z-car) and the exact same part number was used by a number of Datsun 5-speeds in the early 1980s.
32180-E9800 CHECKING ASSY-REVERSE
* FS5W60A
* FS5W71B
It is a complex part with at least eight pieces.

managed to find one from a Guy on the MG forum who had one spare... thanks for your help...
for the sake of completeness i'll post some pictures of the part when i get it...
