The stock Datsun 1200 points coil is 12V. So are the EI coils. The difference is that a ballast resistor is used by the old coil, as it is not designed to sink full current (it will overheat if the resistor is not used).

When the points are closed, the voltage at the coil will read around 6V. When the points are open it will read 12V. Average indicated voltage (with engine running) will be around 9V.
