I just got a call from my Diff Guy saying that the 3.7:1 gears I wanted to fit into a housing (that had 4.1:1 gears) needed an approx 2mm spacer to get them to mesh correctly.
He asked if any of the housings had different offsets?
I said I thought all H165 were created equal but didnt know for sure?.

Can I get it work to work If I can get a spacer machine perfect?

Yes, H165 uses different gearsets depending on which version is it:

Type I Namiha (old type) - last used 1979
* includes both H165 and H165B (low tooth) types
* For Gear Carrier 38310-N5000
* N5 gearset numbers

Type II Takaha (high-tooth) - used 1979-1986
* high-tooth H165B
* For Gear Carrier 38310-W8500
* W gearset numbers

New Type - first used in 1986
* M11 bolts for ring gear (others use M10 bolts)
* Same Gear Carrier as Type II
* G3 gearset numbers

Gearset (ring & pinion / crown wheel & pinion)

So any housing that has 4.11 gears can be fitted with 3.70 gears. But there were three different 3.70 gearsets

* Type I gears don't fit Type II carriers, and vice versa
* Type II and New Type carriers possibly(?) swaps gears if the differential is also swapped

I haven't heard of any spacers working. That is the case with the H190 carriers which come in two types (low-offset type and high-offset type). But H165 isn't made that way

For those not aware, the gear carrier is the center section (pumpkin) WITHOUT the gears or differential unit installed
