your guess is as good as mine. i was just told by some 1200 rally fella that putting a 1000 head on an a14 gives way more compression

Perhaps your friend knows something that the rest of us dont know, but i think he's been sniffing too many methanol fumes.

Puting a Datsun 1000 "COUPE" cylinder head will do it,.... a little.
The compression ratio for Datsun 1000's was 8.5 to 1, while the 1000 coupe's engine had 9 to 1. The bore, stroke, pistons & rods are the same, but the head has a diferent part number, & this is where the compression is.

I believe that the combustion chamber in the 1000 [non coupe] head, & the 1200 heads are the same volume, so Datsun engineers dished the 1200 piston a little to keep the compression down to the same 9 to 1 in the 1200 engine, as the longer stroke in the 1200 would have pushed compression up more than they wanted.

The part numbers for the valve components vary between 1000's & 1200's also, but are all interchangeable.
I used a 1000 coupe head, with all new 1200 valve train parts on my wife's two door. I also used the Repco "replacement" 1000 pistons in it's 1200 engine & this gave me flat tops, raising the compression a little more.
Even with this, i would never describe the compression as being "way more" It probably went from 9 to 1 up to somewhere near 9.75 to 1, which was good when you remember that it is all done with stock, unmodified parts.

The 1000 head also has the hole for the heater fitting [at the back of the head] in a slightly diferent place, but not diferent enough to be a problem

So how do you pick a coupe head from a non coupe one. Beats me, but my head came from a wrecked, but otherwise untouched coupe, back in the early 80's

If you are using the original type single carb manifold, then the 1000 coupe exhaust manifold will bolt up, it has no leaking butterfly valve, & has a dual outlet like the GX. It's a really good manifold to use on otherwise stock type engines. In fact, it looks like the GX exhaust manifold was derived from it.

from my experience about datsun heads there is not much difference between a 1200 head and a 1000 head, as far as the engine reconditioner was concerned they are the same and completely interchangable. However the later heads off of sunny and late 120Y's have an extra threaded hole at the front near the thermostat housing for the thermo-electirc choke switch.

you could increase the compression of the head by getting it shaved to the deck markings, but again this would only be a small increase and it brings the valves dangerously close to hitting the pistons at high revs!

I hope this helps a little and good luck with your quest!
