Greetings:
I have a '63 ute arriving next weekend and am looking for a friendly space to work on it in San Francisco, California. I'll need to put the ute on jacks periodically. Willing to pay of course. If anyone has any leads here, it'd be much appreciated.

I'd love to offer space in my shop but Fort Worth, Texas might be a bit of a commute to work on it. Where did you get a Ute and how much was shipping? If you don't mind my asking.

Thanks for the offer. Like you said, it's a bit far though. So the scoop on this ute is that I purchased it off eBay for 300 bucks from a guy who lives in San Francisco, but keeps cars about an hour or two north of here. He's going to tow the ute down this weekend. We agreed for me to pay him a hundreds buck for the tow. The ute will be a fun challenge. My uncle has been into fixing Datsuns for a number of years and I've had the pleasure of driving a few, but this will be the first car I've ever owned. We'll see what happens. I've been reading up quite a bit and it seems the ute might need some major work. It starts, idles and runs, but makes some funny noises when you rev it, which I understand could be trouble. Also, the brakes need work. The sellers says they work, but "feel like they're getting ready to lock up." This makes me nervous. Well, it'll be an adventure...assuming I can find some space to work on it! It's a tight market for that around here.

Regards,

Erik

Well darn. I thought if you had gotten one from across the seas, I'd find out what it costs to get my own. Does anyone out there know about what it would cost to bring one in to the states. Houston, Texas would be my preferred port of entry but beggars can't be choosey I guess. Did Canada or Mexico get Utes? For that matter, did the US ever get any? I knew a guy who said he could get new South African Utes but that deal never happened. Oh well, I guess that's all I have.

The guy I purchased my ute from in San Francisco has another for sale . It's a '64. There are pics at the website: http://www.datsunsports.com

Hope that helps.

Well, those are very nice indeed. However, they are not the type of Ute I'm looking for. Actually, "looking for" might be too emphatic. I'd be interested in a Ute that looks like the '71-'73 1200 Coupe and Sedan. So, once again, does anyone know if a)the US ever got that Ute, b)Canada or Mexico ever got that Ute, c)if not, what would be involved in getting one to the states? Am I wrong in thinking that they are still in production in South Africa? I was told that they were a few years back.

yeah they still make them. the roof is a bit higher, the cab is a touch longer, they are a long wheelbase too, and they have injected a14s. oh yeah, they have rectangular lights too.
i like the older style, now they look like motorised wheelbarrows.
