How do u uplaod an avatar?

How do u uplaod an avatar? I went into my profile n clicked on uplaod avatar...but when i choose a pic from My Documents and upload it, it comes up error. Can someone give me some directions on doing this please. any help would be appriciated.

its gotta be within the size limits.. there on the page where u it says upload. or whateva.
