why a fuel pump

i have to ask you people why has my 1972 1200 ute have an powerd fuel pump and not a pump running of the engine???? all the a series motors i have seen run off the motor (my a12 has the dizy at the front)if that makes a diff

I wonder if it is possible that at sometime between when the vehicle was brand new, & when you bought it, someone has removed this fuel pump & replaced it with an powered one.

This, it would seem to me, is a very plausible explanation since there were no Datsun 1200 vehicles sold in Australia with anything other than an engine mounted 'mechanical' fuel pump. The position of the distributor, in this particular instance, has no bearing on this situation.
