Hydralic clutch reservoir........

I have a LHD '72 1200 sedan. From what I've heard, the LHD 1200's had hydralic clutches. Yesterday when I drove the car the clutch felt very soft and only seemed to be partially disengaging making it harder to #### gears. Under the hood there is a reservoir next to the mastercylinder. This reservoir was empty. Is this the reservoir for the hydralic clutch system? It is on the left had side of the firewall. And will filling thie reservoir help relieve the above symptoms? Thanks

Filling it is a good idea, in fact a very good idea.
From what it sounds like, it is the clutch pot, and yes filling it is a good idea. If you have totally run it out of fluid, it will need to be bled to get the air bubbles out, which isnt too hard, just time consuming. you need two people to do it. One to pump the clutch, and one to bleed the system.
Just filling it up wont fix anything. The air bubbles are stiil there.

If you dont know how to bleed the clutch or dont know anyone to do it for you, you can either pay a mechanic to do it, or dont use the clutch at all. I generllay dont use the clutch in my datto. It saves a bit of wear and tear on the clutch as long as you do it right.

I think that it nwould be a VERY good idea if you get yourself a workshop manual, or at the very least, an owners manual. Even one for the following B210 [120Y] owners manual would do for now.
These books will provide you with the most BASIC understanding of the primary maintainance required on these cars. Please do it real soon as these are nice little cars & deserve better treatment than this.

If the fluid level is down so far that it affects clutch operation, there is possibly a leak, & the workshop manual will help you to fix this yourself at low cost.

Good idea. But just to clear something up. I am not the one who has neglected the car. I just picked it up a few weeks ago. It needs a lot of work and I can only do things so fast. I really want to make the car nice becasue they are so rare over here. Thanks again for the information. Also, am I right that this is the right reservoir?

ANY hydraulic resevoir that has no fluid in it needs to be topped up. If it isn't the clutch cylinder thats empty, it'l be the brake, & thats even worse.
Fill it anyway & see. There is a good chance that it just might self bleed in time.

I overhauled the clutch master cylinder on my 200B [810] & there was no one to bleed it but me, so i just pumped & pumped. After a while it worked enough to drive it. Within a week, it was perfect.

Yes, that's the one. All american 1200s have two master cylinders. A dual-reservoir one for brakes, and a single-reservoir master cylinder for the clutch. Both take brake fluid.

Chilton manual on ebay
These Chilton manuals are pretty good and they are cheap. It's a good manual to have in addition to the factory service manual.
