Hey, Ive got a 68 1000 with an A14 motor,
currently my car revs its balls off at speed
thanx to the short ratios in the 1000 diff
and i was wondering if anyone had info on common 5speed conversions, I've looked arround for an original A series 5speed but have been told they're rare
as rocking horse shit.

can anyone help, any info would be much appriciated.

Thanx

Depends where you are. There are still many Datsun Sunny 5 speeds available in NZ. If you want to spend a little you can also get a conversion kit for a Toyota 5 speed. Another option
would be dropping a taller diff in - depends what you use the vehicle for as to whether you want to sacrifice quickness for lower revs. Of course if you're running the A14 at 200k's
then it's always gonna rev hard no matter what!

I used to have the same problem with my 1000 coupe, I swapped the diff centre with one out of a 1200 coupe (higher gearing), its a bolt in swap. A five speed
would be nice though.

I have a 5 speed box sitting out in the shed waiting to bolt onto my A14. But somehow i dont think it going to handle the 150hp. I would be willing to sell it once i get a toyota box. But
that wont be for another couple of months.

The Toyota boxes are alot stronger and also have a overdrive 5th gear. Were as the sunny 5 speed has closer ratio's and a 1:1 5th gear. To get the toyota box bolted up you will need to
buy a bellhousing from Dellow which will include all bits nessesary for the clutch to work etc. I think theres a bit of tunnel bashing needed unless you have an auto shell to fit them in.
Hope this helps.

Scott

sweet! hardcore man! just build your A14 to handle the revs, get a diff out of a 1200, and you will be sweet as, i dont think an overdrive will make that much difference, as it would only
probably drop the revs about 300rpm at 100km/h, i dont know, would this be right guys? lots of cars i drive you spend all your time in 4th anyways, thats why i still got the 4 speed, cause
if your driving it so its reving its nuts off, then you aint gonna be in 5th that much anyways, thats if you get a box with overdrive, anyways man, get the diff, you will be sweet, save your
money for rocker cover conversions... ive got a fire orange rocker cover at the moment, and i also have a mint spare engine with a mint cover, and i also got another mint rocker cover from
work, its just dusty, the paint is so mint, its been sitting there since my boss brought the workshop, so yeah, its all go on rocker cover performance over here.
also you could try going up tyre profiles, or even rim size, but ultimatly work out your engine for the high revs man, you know you want to, then who gives if you have a low ratio diff, ten
grand on the dial whould give a pretty hefty speed factor.
anyways go hard man, choice from chris. man i talk some rubbish sometimes.
