It's a bit of an old school bit of gear, but seems like a sound theory- see through plug so you can tune based on the colour of the flame in the cylinder)
has anyone here used one?
Are they any good?
Can you get them in Australia?

I have used one for about 10 years,I reckon its a good tool.

I got mine at Cash Converters, but I think you could get one posted out from the UK without much drama.

There are a few on Ebay at the mo but they are either 40EUR or 30 year old "only used twice" looking like they are there as collectors items rather than useable.

Can you use them at revs & under load?

My plan was to hook up a digital camera under the bonnet & go for a run, (possibly at night to make sure you can see it) and tune based on that, rather than just static revving.

What do you reckon?

I reckon it might be a bit tricky that way,but not impossible.

It is a pretty well designed bit of gear and works quite well just as intended.

Even an old one should work fine, try it out static and see what you think ,you might be happy with it just like that.

I am suspicious that I am lean through the top end - 4500rpm and up, and was looking for a way to check that without having to go to a dyno.

I second the wide band 02 sensor. the color tune is really not going to be easy to make work in a setup with a digital camera. You could also get an EGT gauge but it's not as straightforward as the 02 sensor.

maybe we all should bite the bullet and go to the dyno every year or so and get a real good tune. I think that's what i'm going to do, just make 1 big trip to the tuning shop and have it all done at once, get it on the dyno and optimize the AFR, then align and set camber then tweak the ride height and corner weights, probably won't cost very much and then everything will be perfect.

Lambda sensor was my next question But I didn't want to put it all in the same thread. I have heard mixed reviews about them, from "they're great best tune up tool ever"- to "complete waste of time, too many variables, dont compensate for temperature properly, proper mechanics ones are $5000 for a reason- a $200 O2 sensor & gauge is just a waste of money"

and probably more convincing negative arguements than positive ones

you can get an ok wide band 5 wire o2 meter for under $400. It's much more useful than the ones that are 1 or 2 wire and cost $150.

Are you talking $400 US?

That's about 650 australian paseos, which is a pretty serious % of the value of the car!!
