Hi all.

I can get two types of coils.
Is there any significant difference in upgrading my coil?

I currently have the Pertronix pointless ignition module in my distributer but would like to increase the power to the plugs.
Will this give a little extra horses?
The one I can get is made by Blue Thunder.
Minnesh runs one on his 1400 that was a huge debate a while back.
He said he can see that the spark is much stronger when looking at the sparkplugs.
I phoned around and was informed that it gives a 80 000 volt output.

The other one is Ignitor one and puts out 40 000 volts.
I am thinking of this one as it is much cheaper than the Blue Thunder one.
Any information appreciated.

I put a Pertronix kit into my std 1200 and I like not having to deal with the points.

I also installed their coil and used the 3-ohm version so I would not have to use the ballast resistor. The car did not run any better using their coil, and gas mileage stayed the same.

For some unknown reason, my car started running bad at random times. I finally figured out that it was when the headlights were on. The last item I changed was the coil, so I installed the standard coil and ballast resistor, and I have not had a problem since I switched back to standard.

I know that doesn't answer your question directly, but my experience with the higher voltage coil is to save your money. In my case, there was no upside to using it.

Increasing spark only helps ignite the fuel in the engine, yes the higher the volts the bigger the spark, but all it does is really help ignite the fuel a lot quicker and giving you more of a chance to burn all the fuel in the cylinder instead of some. In a high performance engine that has had the works done to it, expensive spark plugs, electonic iginition, cams and valve set, then yes the volts will increase horsepower but in the tests I have seen on dyno's you gain maybe 3-5 Kw's on a 450KW motor. So unless you are chasing big horsepower it is hardly worth it. I have seen coils the are 65000 volts out perform coils double there output size, it really depends on how well they are built and do they suit the application.
The other guy is right in what he says about burning stuff out to be careful beacuase big volts can fry small wires and contacts etc in distributers if they are not of good quality. You also need to be warey of how well everything is shielded to a mate of mine put a msd balster coil on a subaru off road car and we found that the spark was jumping in the distributer because the coil was to powerful for the distributer set up. the problem was fixed by adding bakerlite shields but was a real pain to do.

The best thing on an old car is to at least fit an electronic ignition module even if you keep the points in the distributer the sparks are a lot cleaner and you can set the points and forget about them as the points will never burn out.
I have built both the trandy and jaycar one and fitted them to different cars and have never had to touch the points again.
