If it 'looks' stretched, then it's probably illegal in Australia. It doesn't do anything for performance or safety either. If it did, the racers would have done it decades ago.

The Tyre & Rim Association of Australia set the standards for wheels & tyres & list a "Design rim width" & an "approved rim width" list for each size of tyre.

This standard is what the registration Nazis use for their regulations. Staying within the specs will help ensure that your insurance claim will be paid.

By way of example, I will mount my 185x60x13's on my newly aquired Watinabe's that are 5" wide, for front runners.
This is the design rim width for this size. The permitted rim widths for this tyre range from 5" out to 6-1/2", or 7" if the tyre is 60 series or lower.

Rears will be 205x60x13's on matching 5-1/2" Watinabe's. This is the design rim width for this size. The permitted range is 5-1/2" out to 7-1/2", or 8" of the tyre is 60 series or lower.

wow, i for one would like to see a stretched tire on a 5" wheel

seriously, the stretched tire look that's popular in the german modified car scene was probably influenced by the the japanese street rowdy car gangs (aka bosozuku)

part of the allure of these gangs is to do illegal or unsafe mods to their cars to emulate an exaggerated race car and fantasy manga look:

you see it in some of the wacky jdm model kits:

thanks in part to the internet, jap car enthusiasts around the world are being influenced by this look and may try to copy it

however, the question is whether it's legal or roadworthy and if you can even get a tire shop to install them that way

either way, the premise is more wheel, less tire

the idea is to lower your car to the extreme, and allow the obscene negative camber to keep the wheels from smacking the fender lips

(it's a bit more difficult if you have a live rear axle of course)

again, this is all for appearance, not sensible engineering

but try explaining that to a teenager

Dman, it is/was very popular in some places to wear pants too big and no belt. Now, you'd think they would fall off and cause the guy to trip. But I never saw anybody trip.

Just because tires too big for the wheel "might" be a problem doesn't mean it is.

Brown I , where do you live?? Please fill out your location that makes for better responses and you will find out people closer to you will have better answers because the businesses and other information will be relevant to you.

About the wheels, anything is posible in moderation. You can stretch a tire, but not so far that in case of low pressure ( and all of us had low pressure in a tire...it is a fact of life ) your tire will come off....or your wheel will be shreded.

You do not have to go to unsafe dimmensions to achieve what you are looking for. The more radical you go, the less fun your drive will be because you will have to be Xtra carefull about small pot holes, speed bumps and the occasional debrin on the road that would be nothing to as more adequate package.

You can go safely into that look...past a certain point, it is diminishing returns and aggregate minuses.

The main reasons for it would be
A) smaller tyres = lower price = cheaper
B) the tyre looks better and not all lame and bulgey and
C) tyre arch clearance for maximised lowering. booyah.

If i tryed fitted 205/60/13's on the rear of my wagon with it the height it is at the moment, making it so they dont inialate my arches would be a hell mission, man those tyres are big and stupid. So i now run 175/50/13's, problem solved.

If you can't fit 205's under the rear of a 1200, then you have the wrong wheel, & fitting dinky little overstretched tyres on them will not change that fact. You have the wrong wheel, that's the actual problem.

I have seen this 'styling exercise' for years & in my view, it looks as crook now as it did then. I guess that I'm an old fuddy duddy that prefers safety & legality over dubious looks. Lame & bulgey? ... gimme a break.
Using derogatory names like that doesn't change the fact that the wrong wheel is under the car.

Like I said, if overstretched undersize tyres actually offered any advantage, then racers would have done it decades ago.

What next, will we all have exhausts that extend 4 feet in the air behind the car? Yeah, that looks cool too. [pardon me while I puke]

Here endeth rant.

Ddgonzal
I don't think that loose pants really relates to funny looking & unsafe wheel & tyre combinations somehow.

Back in the 80s I remember the small p/u truck ( small ute ) fever here in USA. Nissan trucks, Mazdas, Isuzus, Toyotas , even the LUV trucks ( a japanese truck w a Chevy badge on it, like the Mitsubishi Starion and Plymouth Conquest, same car, one name the original japanese product..the other one a renamed still japanese product....weird..) and I remember everybody having that stretched look, big wheels, 15X 10 or even 12s with tires that barely made it. It kind off looked cool, but every single one I saw had shreded, scratched and badly mawled wheels. Curbs to not forgive, and inocent parking could become an expensive repair....
Some degree is not bad , like the front tires on the blue ute....but the rear ones are too way far gone.....in tight cornering....that wheel will......ouch!!

I like this wheel.........

Beats me how the tyre guys manage get the bead to seat properley.

Surely they can't just do this w/ air pressure!?
