Use something to wedge the top of the door open, to give you some room to work, be careful not the scratch the paintwork.

By doing what you described, you are probably trying to hook onto the rod that runs from the lock button to the actual lock mechanism. Works if you can actually hook on to it, but it's harder that it looks. Better to use a thin strip of metal (like a steel ruler) with a notch cut in it.
If you have some packing strap, push it through the rubber next to the window frame and try and hook the button up that way. Less chance of scratching your paint too.

i tried the screw driver in the door method but the little lock buttons on my model sit down so there is no edge to hook onto. should i b able to slide a ruler with a slot down onto that rod and just push it down?
ps thanks for the help

i second the packing tape (blue plastic stuff). dont waste you time and risk damage with the coat hanger. all you do is pull the door away at the top corner just enough to slide the tape in (must be folded over) then slide it over lock pin/button pull away and up and wallah. if you dont have packing tape use a zip tie or somthing and do the same thing as above

Thought i should add with the packing tape idea, if you sticky tape or staple a length of course sand paper to it,it helps with grip on dome lock heads like u mentioned
