Hi. My little 1.2 Datsun 120A F-II (F10) FWD from 1977 is a hell of a car. It always starts. Always. I LOVE the A12 engine.

A friend of mine offers me this 5-speed gearbox. The gearbox comes from an N10 Datsun Cherry from 1980. As far as I know, the N10 Cherry (Pulsar in US?) also came with an A engine... does the N10 box fit into the F10 and mates with the A12 engine? I do a lot of highway cruising. And if not - what are the modifications that needs to be done??

Sincerely Lars, Norway

Hi there Datsun120AFII...

I have 2 datsun N10 (one is only for spare parts) and i have sucefully removed the A14 engine from the N10 and have mated it with an 4speed RWD transmission for my 120Y...so i guess all A series engines have the same bellhousing pattern...so you should be able to mate your gearbox with your engine....

But i dont know nothing about transmission mounts for you F10 chasis...

Peace...

It will fit but you will have to do some cutting and fiddling with the gear linkages. (I have just fitted an A14 and 5 speed Gearbox out of a N10 Pulsar into me E10 Cherry). Have a look on the Datsun Oners UK website for more information.

In 1980 the gearbox changed frm the earlier to the newer style. It is completely different (and better).

depending on what you do you may need to swap over the drive shaft mounts on the gear box. or have the drive shafts resized.

Resize the drive shafts, yes, that's what the guy at Datsun Club Norway told me to do, it won't fit directly. Did you find this hard work, or was it okay? You don't have a quick and basic recipe for how to resize the drive shafts?

I appreciate your help very much! thank you!

Regards from Norway

So, if I get this correct; The 5-speed gearbox mated to the newer 1,5 E-type Nissan engine will not fit the A engine's bell housing pattern - but the 5-speed that got out of the 1,4 A14-powered will fit? (Just like Toyota's pattern system)

When it comes to modifying drive shafts, I understand this is hard work. Probably, I need help on this one. But to start with, I need drive shafts from both the F10 and the N10 (pre-1981, as I understand something happened to the gearbox around then?). I'm really blank on this one, but it would have been very nice to get a 5-speed into my Cherry F10 :)

thanks people, wouldn't make it without you!

Hey, gotta bring this up again. At scrap dealers in the US, a lot of F10 gearboxes are listed. Car-parts give me the choice of choosing between 4- and 5 speed FWD transmission. When I list the available F10 5-speeds, I get a couple search results;

GW5167

GW5168

Are any of those Nissan gearbox codes? I sure cannot locate them on the Tech Wiki.

And more important, will they fit in the european F10? I suppose the chassis is the same as in the US....
