i changed the distributor cap on the sedan yesterday but when i replaced the leads i must have accidently put them on wrong! the car started but rough so i knew something was wrong. i checked them and changed to what i was sure was right but apparently it wasn't. the motor turned over, the carby backfired but it didnt start.
i have thouroughly looked at the correct firing order and i am sure i have it right now but the car wont start the left side of the carby just keeps puffing and spluttering.
its a weber carb and i have now put the old cap back on but it still wont go!! help please!!

it sounds like the leads are not correctly fitted. the firing order is 1432. did you have dizy out.put engine on tdc no1 compression(turning engine clockwise), then check where rotor faces to cap position, fit leads from this point dizy turns (anti clockwise)no1 first then 3 / 4 / 2. hope this helps. cheers

Yeah dude I'm with BigE sounds like you may have muddled the leads, just make sure their firing order corresponds with the rotational direction of the rotor, sometime this can be muddled.

cheers guys the leads are in the right sequence but i fitted them as per a diagram on ozdat that i found. Maybe the distributor isnt in the same position as factory. Will try get tdc on no. 1 and go from there. Its L16 but most 4 cyl should be the same. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: The dizzy must be 180 degrees out, you can compensate for this by changing the leads around .
so when you put the leads back in the correct order it wont run?
Sorry I was a bit drunk when I wrote the original reply, Bakat says it better in his reply.

Take your dissy cap off and turn the engine over and see which direction your rotor button is going and that is the direction you put your leads. Find top dead center on your timing mark on your front crank pulley and that should be no 1. An old habit of mine is to take no 1 plug out and put a long thin piece of wire (thin welding wire) down the cylinder to make sure piston is on TDC. If it is, put your leads in the cap in the correct firing order and to the correct plugs. If it is a points dissy make sure your points have the correct gap and it should go. You can set your timing to ? BTDC afterwards.
Hope this makes sense.

i think your dizzy is 180 degree out of phase. try swap your lead 1 and 4, 3 and 2. sometimes the mechanic put the dizzy 180 degree out of order, but no problem, swapping 1 and 4, 3 and 2 will solve it.
