Another bite of progress.

manage to fix the tub/cab area and completed most of the fwd part of the tub still a few little holes to go.

since the cab wall was rotted out I replaced the area using 50 x 20 x 1.6mm RHS.. I think it looks neater than trying to stitch sheet in.

Next job, fix the rust near the wheel arches and mini tub.

much better with the rhs, might also add some structual rigidity to the datsuns.

did you think about moving it rear ward a little more to get some more adjustments for the seats rearwards? the one bugbear of the utes.

Hi unfamilia,

I had a heap of ideas about moving the wall back, but it started to get a bit depressing just thinking about the size of the job. so the decision was made to keep it all simple.

the rhs worked out well and this turned out to be easier than trying to replicate the original pressings or folding up something... it is super rigid now, it doesnt really tie into any other rails so I hope it should be all ok.

Cheers

Ed

Hi all,

A little more progress on the wheel arches/tubs.

started by removing the rusty bits.

repaired the floor

Using a trailer guard to start, fabbed up an arch and swaged in some lines.

welded one side in

made the other side to match.. just need to weld in.

still a few holes to patch in the tray, and need to make up some nice end caps to finish where I cut the raised sections normally next to the wheel arches.

Also took the opp to fix rust in the frame rails where the 2nd layer sheets over near the bump stops.

was a heap of effort but worth it.

Cheers

Ed

thanks mate, glad you like them, the trailer guard as a start really helps.

Hey Ed, mad work there, great stuff! I was just looking at my tub today to see what I want to do with wheel arches.
Did you consider running the guards right through to the quarter in one piece?
I can't tell from the photo but did you trim the horizontal section of the floor that protrudes into the wheel well back to level with the chassis rail?
What size are the tubs? 32"? From my measurements 28" would pretty much replicate the size of the outer arch.
Anyway, more great work, keep it up!

Hey Shoota,

thanks mate, yes I did consider running the guards all the way through to the quarter, but I had already completed the passenger side quarter outer replacement so didnt want the extra work.

the rail lip has been ground back and the horizontal sections trimmed back too. the face of the tub sits almost flush with the rail. This leaves a very small section of rail on each end of the tub sitting within the well. (will take a pic to help explain).

The size of the tub is 32" and trimmed down as best as possible to suit.. it is a good fit compared to original, I was concerned about the radius being too large.

you can buy the trailer guards here... well recommended.
