hey guys just a couple of questions about rims sizes and stretching tires. will these rims fit my 1200 ute? http://otomoto.shop033.com/p/4596472/watanabe-14x65-14x7.html

and what does strething the tire do? i like the look but does it make it better peformance?

thanks will.

think its mainly for looks unless your racing, you have to watch it because stretching a tyres to far is illegal and if your running standard struts in the front you should be right for fitment but not 100% sure about 1200's

better peformance... that made me giggle

looks only

tyres not designed for that at all! side wall strength is crucial, angling the side walls would greatly reduce the side wall stiffness/stength in the "vertical" direction

not technically illegal unless you change the overall tyre height or rim is too wide or rim hangs out of guard (stretch too much and become cop bait- they'll find something).
check some of the early 70's F1 stretced tyres! was told they were restricted(rules) in tyre width so they used wider rims to stretch the tyres so they could use the extra few cm of tread that was on the sidewall.(not sure if true but makes sense)
also stretching a tyre reduces tyre height and can throw out speedos.

It pretty much is just for looks and makes it easier to get that "stance". But there is a massive difference in sidewall flex on a 7" rim with 165/50 compared to say a 195/60 which doesn't really matter to most people but i hate the feeling of a folding sidewall.
And as far as legality goes, it is legal, very much so, there are standards for what tyre can go on what rim, and if its outside the standards youre asking for trouble.
If it were me though you can't really stretch on smaller rims needs to be at least a 7" and a fairly small tyre. Its more suited to larger rims like say a 17x10"

have a look at http://www.willtheyfit.com/ as this will help give you an idea of where the wheel will sit against the upright and also how much stretch you will have for the tyre you are looking at

I have 13x7 -7 on the front with 165/65 and 13x8 +3 on the rear with 185/65 on my ute and the fit fine and look good too, stretch on small wheels does look good so long as the side wall is tall still

stretching tyres on rims has been done in motorsport for decades. The right type of tyre is paramount though. There are more than just verticle forces being applied to the tyre on cornering, there are also lateral ones. By stretching the tyre combined with a stiff tyre wall the lateral movement of the tyre on the rim can be reduced and the effect will result in better feel and response in steering inputs.

take for example Nikki Lauda's 1976 ferrari.

Or even a ferrari 375 from 1952.

F1 cars... thats really taking it to the extreme and not really relevant

im sure those tyres are designed for exactly that, if the tyre manufacturer says this tyre will perform best on a 8" wide rim im pretty sure some dude at ferrari doesnt go..."nah screw that, how drift would it look on a 10" rim"

tyres come with a min and max wheel width that they are designed for, stretching it to suit a wider rim will definitely reduce performance and is deemed unsafe by the tyre manufacture (and would definitely be illegal)

Im not against it, although i don't understand it and don't think it looks good, if that look is what your after good luck to ya
