Hey sorry guys but I've got two more questions about 5 speeds and I promise I'll never ask any again! Im just a little confused as I've been told and I've read that there were only two types of 5 both with a dogleg pattern, The gearbox I have is exactly like my 4 speed gearpattern but above reverse is where 5th is, it looks somthing like this 1 3 5 __ 2 4 R (5th is actually closer to 3 than R is to 4) Is this the type of gearbox you guys are talking about Apparently it came out of an A14 sunny wagon. Second Question. If you know of this box can you tell me if the Flywheel and clutch are different from the stock A14 units? Im about to start cutting my trannie tunnel in preparation of putting the 5 speed in, but I dont want to start until I have all the necessary bits. any info appriciated Thanx

I have a 5spd with that pattern in my car, came standard in B310 Sunny (A15). Clutch is same as for 120Y's, probably same as 1200 but I don't know for sure. Why are you cutting the tunnel? If it's the same gbox I have it fits in a 1200 tunnel without modification

the Trans you have apears to be a later model overdrive trans, should use the stock flywheel and clutch asm. The dog leg trans reverse is above 1st and 5th gear is normally 1to1 ratio providing closer gear ratios Bob

Im putting the 5spd into a 1000 manual transmission shell the 1000 had an even smaller case and bellhousing on the gearbox than the 1200 and the 5spd I've got has both a bigger bellhousing and case. So its Oxy torch and angle grinder my little 1000

I am not sure where you get your information but personally, I have never seen a Datsun 5-speed that had a 1:1 5th gear ratio. "5th gear is normally 1to1 ratio providing closer gear ratios" I am on my third dogleg tranny now and all have been overdrive. I have had a few friends that had the dogleg tranny and all of them have been overdrive as well. Mareo

Look at a non-dogleg. I believe some of those (from a B310) had the 1:1 5th gear. Mareo wrote: personally, I have never seen a Datsun 5-speed that had a 1:1 5th gear ratio. "5th gear is normally 1to1 ratio providing closer gear ratios" I am on my third dogleg tranny now and all have been overdrive

The dogleg tranny has reverse where your 1st gear is located and 1st gear is like where a 3-speed trans is located like below. R 2 4 __ 1 3 5 There are basically two size splines on the A-series clutches. Clutches on most 5-speeds are usually the same and the 4-speeds are usually the same, but 4-speeds are different from 5-speeds. At least that is basically how it is in USA.

When it comes to 5 speeds it is generally thought that there are 2 types but the 1:1 5th does exist ,I have 2 and would love some more. They were offered by Nissan Motorsport for competition but were also fitted in the Japanese market 1200 GX and in subsequent GX models in Japan as a dealer option. There are Datsun specialists in Japan who still offer these boxes for sale but they are incredibly expensive. 1200s in Japan have become a very highly repected model and it is no longer easy to pick up cheap parts. I recently paid $100.00 for a GX grille badge, I didn't need it but I "had to have it". On a change of subject when it comes to which is better a coupe or sedan, it's irrellevant...it's whatever makes you happy. I am like Eddie Ratdat, I'd like one of every model ( I've had them all now except the 2 dr panel van)all lined up in the garage.I just saved a left hook 2 dr 510 wagon, which has found a good home. For years I stripped and modified them to go faster and now I'm restoring them instead. Maybe I am making up for my earlier crimes. I am still building race cars out of them but it's for historic racing. Believe it or not I also belong to a vintage car club and the 1200s I have are included in their register, some of the old boys aren't impressed until they see that the cars are restored and are time capsule machines. It's all about enjoying Dattos guys, though I must admit to have destroyed a few 120Ys and 310 Sunnys in Demo Derbies, I saved the running gear for my 1200s though,....sorry

The B310 'normal' pattern 5spd in my coupe is not 1:1. I wish it was! 1:1 close ratio Datsun boxes are worth gold here in NZ.
