I'm curious if any of you automatic transmission types know if I would have problems with the Nissan race cam #1 and an automatic. The cam specs are .487" lift and 300 degrees duration. I'm still trying to get my mom to drive a 1200 but she won't row a stick shift. Also, is it pooible to fit the A-series auto in a manual unibody? How much bigger is the slush box than the four speed? I know, the mounts are wrong. I've thought of that already.

I tried that trick with the standard size converter worked on heaps , it ended up being a 3500 stally by a reputable firm. Needless to say it didn't work and when i spoke to the people that did it the information i got was this, because my car was so light (760Kgs) and diff gears so low (4.54:1 "Don't Ask !!!") and four cyls not producing much torque(compared to 6's or 8's) that it was very difficult to get it to stall up properly.(it wanted to go as soon as you put it in drive). I was running about a 35/75 cam at the time and it just took forever to get going but the shifts where fantastic. The only choice i had then was to go smaller in the converter size to make a better stally (or one that would work) but the only choice was a worked toyota item adapted to the Datsun = $650. So the manual went back in !!!! Well for the moment anyway. . Have a look at my profile for details of the rest of the car.Later.

The transmission tunnel for a manual transmission might be wide enough to fit it (maybe), but the area that I thought would cause more problems was along the front top part of the transmission where it slopes down...the 4 speed has a greater slope requiring less rearward space between the engine/firewall. The auto doesn't slope down as aggressive so that whole bellhousing area needs to be a little larger for the auto. If you can get it to work, the auto is sooo slow compared to the manual off the line. The 1st gear in the auto is almost the same ratio as 2nd gear in the 4 speed so it's like taking off in 2nd gear all the time. Once it gets going it's not too bad though, just that initial zero to about 30 mph is doggy bigtime. Good luck!

As for the first gear acceleration, the car has a 4.10 ring and pinion which should help there. Besides, this is going to be a car my mom can drive on occasion and not a racecar. My main concern is with the lack of vacuum at idle due to the cam. I know almost nothing about automatics and was wondering if that was going to be a problem. The lack of vacuum not knowledge. As for fitment, looking at the cavernous amount of space that Nissan used around the transmissions, I figure I can get by with a closer tolerance. But it might not fit at all, and then we'll know.

Hi I use that cam in a autocross car, does not produce any power under 4500rpm. not a good cam for the street and definetly not for an auto trans.

Well, all right then. I guess mom's car will be getting a different engine with a stock cam. I kind of hated to relegate that engine to slow duty anyway. I'll find another use for it I'm sure. Thanks for all the advice everyone.
