I'm sure this question has been asked before ! I've had a look on the forum but haven't had any luck ... Can any point me in the direction ?

Or can anyone give me the process of shorting an r31 diff to suit a 1200 ute ? I have a fair idea but have never done it before

Thanks

Ok so I found some info on the site not by looking, by googling it an threads came up from the forum !

So I found that the r31 diff is 1460mm an standard 1200 diff is 1305mm drum to drum ... So I need to shorten the diff 50mm one side and 105mm the other.

Think I'm soughed their so my other question would be is if I'm to shorten the diff like this will it line ok with the drive shaft gearbox ect ..... I'm doing a ca18det conversion with an s12 gearbox an Maddat fitting kit !

Any one here who has done this combo conversion before ?

Thanks sean

no it won't because you have to take the same amount off each side because most tunnels are in the centre of your car it's just the pinnon is off set. you have to work out what off set the wheels are you are using . I only taken 20mm off each side on my diff r31 because if you take to much off you have to get new axles you take away the hardness of the spline.

You would to get the axles cut an re splined anyway because the r31 diff is much bigger then then h165 ? Unless your running flares and different wheel offset ?

I'm running a pretty common wheel 14x6 cheviot and I'm happy with the way they sit under the guard !

So I guess what I'm saying is if I was to shorten the r31 diff to the exact same dimensions as the standard h165 would the pinion be in the right position for the tail shaft to line up with the gear box ? I assume that's why people short the diff by 50mm one side and 105mm the other ?

Being called Bro makes me feel like sitting back in my Jandles pulling beer out of my chillybin. From memory we did the swap the short axle over cut 105 mm off the longer one and respline. Also narrowed the tubes a bit just in case we end up with 10s.Ended up minispooling it. Run a Sr20det in front of it no probs
