annoying rattle from engine-box area... grrr
Guest_
my annoying box/clutch rattle is still there after swapping gearboxes... unlikely 2 boxes in a row have same issue.

put car in R and it rolls yay. put in 1st roll forward, nice its got drive. put it back in N and i hear that friging rattle again!!!! yes. After swappping boxes its unlikely to be the box.

So car in N and foot off clutch, rattle comes from behind engine. near starter from what i hear.
put foot on clutch it disappears. GRRRRR havent test driven yet as i was annoyed.

So it could be clutch rattle (maybe one of the springs came loose on hill climb in dec)? could it bee loose fly?

when box was out clutch looked good, all the splines were on the cover.... or could it be just the throw out bearing.

im at a stage of trying to find a mechanic to help me out.

i was also reading up and apparently lightened flywheels and hd clutchs tend to do this over time.

i just dont want to loose my legs from something crapping its self in there. yeah im being dramatic... but we have all heard stories of exploding clutches and flywhels... thats another reason they make scatter shelids lol.

i do have a spare 4 puck solid center cluch plate- but that is more likely to make any rattle worse due to no absorbtion in the clutch/fly combo.

Contact surface area on the flywheel? Try a spare flywheel?

hey mate,

Since its rattling while in neutral and foot off clutch, it will most likely be the thrust bearings, mainshaft/inputshaft bearings or spigot bearings. My first assumption would be the thrust bearings.

Throwout bearings are usually associated with noise when pressing on the clutch pedal.so likely not to be throwout bearings.

also check oil level in gearbox

cheers

hey Chris _ don't have a spare.couples I've never changed one before. Wouldn't want to get torque wrong etc. don't gave clutch align tool either.

Grunt - oil level to the top. Took 1.5lt. Couldn't fit more. Might need thicker oil then. Like a redline additive?

Adding more than normal oil, or oil additives, is not the way to fix a noisy gearbox. Even old Datsun gearboxes are quiet without any additives.

If the flywheel doesn't seat correctly to the crankshaft it will cause incorrect runout, but would that cause a rattle? I would guess it could cause undue wear.

Why would it unseat after 3 years?
