It is common to encapsulate asbestos found in buildings with laytex paint so I imagine that, you could do something like that on the car.
There is more than one kind of asbestos fiber and there is one in particular which is very bad to be around but others are much less hazardous.
And it may not even be asbestos.

Yes, there is applied at the factory a thick sheet of abestos-like material (but probably not asbestos). It is heat proofing and sound-dampening.

I gutted my wagon yesterday, and found what I think may be asbestos sheeting across the top of the tunnel just behind the firewall? Was this ever done at the factory? Maybe as a heat proofing ect?, someone please tell me I'm wrong :/
