The clutch Release Bearing is often called the throwout bearing or thrust bearing and is operated by the clutch Release Lever.

Overview

RHD and LHD use the same Bearing and spring. B110, B120, B210, B310 all use the same bearing regardless of engine or transmission type.

1. Release Lever differs RHD vs LHD

Interchange

The bearing was originally designed for the Datsun 510 model series (part code 210), so fits many Datsuns, basically most RWD model with A-series, L-series, Z-series, KA-series or VG-series engines.

Most Datsun 510 use a different bearing than the A-series type. Only the small-clutch 510 used the same bearing as Datsun 1200.

Bearing Sleeve

Datsun 1200 used two different length sleeves: 1) standard length for 56L transmission, and 2) short length for 56A tranmission. The difference in length is 4.5mm.

POST Clutch Problems

When swapping transmissions and engines, you should get them as a complete set:

  • Engine plate
  • Flywheel (A12 vs A14/A15)
  • Transmission
  • Release lever
  • Release bearing carrier

If you don't use a matching set, and after swapping transmissions you find the clutch doesn't engage correctly you may need to use the shorter Sleeve, or add/remove an engine plate which can be obtained from a newer engine.

Usage

See usage Combinations below. Follows is a factors consideration.

What determines whether you need to use the short or long bearing carrier? It seems the diff and propeller shaft have no effect on this. The dimension difference is between the engine and transmission case and what's in between:

  • Engine block rear face/crankshaft spec? Exactly the same.
  • Transmission front case depth. 56 differs from 56A.
  • Clutch cover installed height? It seems not. Clutch cover installed height (diaphragm spring-to-flywheel height):
    • B110: 30mm ±1 @ diameter 62mm
    • B310: 30mm ±1 for all engines & transmissions
  • Flywheel? Not only does weight differs, but the thickness differs A12 vs A14/A15.
  • Clutch fork (release arm)? All 56-series B110/B210/B310 are the same. 60-series differs.
  • Engine plate (or lack thereof)? 30411 Rear Engine Plate Part Numbers

The GX5 uses a different release bearing carrier sleeve, because it uses a 56A transmission.

B110 uses no engine plate, only a dust cover as on the right:
17598.jpgAlbum 17598
Left: 4.5mm thick engine plate, used by B210 and later B120 (Datsun 1200 truck)

B110: the transmission front case dimension differs:
* B110 no plate, 3/4spd - carrier H1000
* B110 plate, 5-speed - carrier H5000
B120: Transmission front case differs, but how?
* B120 no plate, Long Body - carrier H1000
* B120 plate, Short Body - carrier H5000
B210, flywheels are different with the different transmissions, but does that matter?
* B210 plate, 60-series - carrier H1000
* B210 plate, 56-series - carrier H5000

Is there one simple difference which determines the carrier length? Or a combination of factors?

POST Clutch release bearing carrier

60-series 5-speed: the ball the fork runs on is 3.5mm further back from the bellhousing face than it is on my 56 series

Dust Cover: bolts to front of transmission, not between engine and transmission, and so has no effect on clutch functionality

A12 flywheelA14/A15 flywheel

.* standard: use original length 1200 bearing sleeve without engine plate
.* short: needs short bearing sleeve OR engine plate (but not both)
.* double-short: Needs both short bearing sleeve + engine plate

Bad combos

  • A14 flywheel, no engine plate, 56A/60 transmission, long carrier. Problem: long. Clutch won't disengage, won't come out of gear. Solution: Add plate (or use short carrier)
  • A12 flywheel, engine plate, 56L transmission, short carrier. Problem: double-short. Clutch won't engage, too much play, gears grind when engine running, car won't go. Solution: Remove engine plate AND use standard carrier.
  • A12 flywheel, 56A/60 transmission, short carrier. Problem: short. Clutch won't fully engage/slips, gears grind when shifting. Solution: Use standard carrier.

H85 Sleeve

One rare option for B310 was the A12 engine along with 5-speed. It used a extra long sleeve. This part is generally only available in Japan market.

30501-H8500 - rare JDM long type
24654.jpgAlbum 24654

It is 4.5 mm longer than the original.
23060.jpgAlbum 23060
Left: JDM rare long type. Right: B110 original

This may have been used with an engine plate. If so, and you remove the engine plate, then the standard length sleeve will work.

In other words

  • A12 (thin) flywheel
  • 60-series (short) transmission
  • 4mm engine plate
Requires long sleeve. However there is no need to use the engine plate.

Available from Pitroad

You can also fabricate your own custom-length sleeve. McKay lengthend the short sleeve to standard length. The same method can be used to make an extra-long sleeve
