Sunny Excellent TS Racing Vol.1

29512.jpgAlbum 29512

At the 1973 Japan Grand Prix held at Fuji Speedway in 73, the Sunny Excellent from Nissan Works competed in the TS-A-II class (1300-1600cc). In order to avenge the humiliation of the previous year, a must-win system was put in place.

NOTE: As background, this is what happened the previous year — from our LZ article:
At the 1972 Japan GP, Nissan entered the Skyline GT-R and Sunny Excellent.
However, the GT-R (TS-B Class) was bettered by Mazda Savanna RX-3, while the Excellent (TS-A Class) was beaten by the combined forces of the Toyota Celica & Corolla Levin. It was an ignominious defeat for Nissan. The sudden ascent of the rotary-engine machines gave Nissan pause, and the GT-R was absent from the Japan GP in the following year. This is why it was so important for Nissan that the Excellent should win.

The engine used in the commercially available Sunny Excellent is a 1428cc inline 4-cylinder SOHC L14 type. However, from '73 onwards, the regulations were changed to allow the bolt-on option to be changed to a DOHC head. For this reason, Nissan Works hastily developed a 16-valve DOHC head. The LZ type racing unit engine with over 200 ps was born.

LZ14 (1600cc) was first raced May 3, 1973 in a PB110 Sunny Excellent Coupe for TS-A class racing. The next week, LZ14s came in 1,2,3 at the 1973 Grand Prix of Japan.

In the final race, the Sunny Excellent equipped with this LZ-type engine overwhelmed rivals such as Celica and Levin. He finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and dominated the podium. It cleared the previous year's humiliation.

The work specification of Sunny Excellent has been revived by the long-established "Speed Shop Kubo (SS KUBO}", which was founded in 75.

At that time, the race setting was surprisingly high.

Layout with a large-diameter tachometer for racing placed in the center. The spy needle points to 9500 rpm. The floor on the passenger side is characterized by a convex shape for the octopus legs [extractors] of the LZ-type engine.

The radiator was also for racing at that time. The capacity has been increased and the core area is larger.

Based on the photos taken at that time, a new side muffler was made behind the passenger seat. Since there is no silencer, the sound of extreme racing resonates.

The Kobe Steel racing mag wheels have a small Nissan mark on them. Since there is no corrosion, it is possible to run.
