I'd suggest each inlet runner will be bell mouthed, therefore the more space they have around them the better - that equals a big plenum. The inlet on the front looks like it is there to have some kind of ducting attached so that the filter can be mounted remotely...say in a cold airbox or out in the air stream......by the look of this set-up, I would almost certainly say it's in a race car.
