Without a locknut, or some other locking device, it would seem that the collar could move on the threaded sleve during vehicle use.. This would presumably lead to wear, & i guess, eventually slop in the thread, or is the spring tension strong enough to prevent this?

I agree Dodgeman, I reckon that this needs a locking nut for the adjustable section.

I'd guess this is why it's in a motorsports catalog, not a regular consumer part, who prefer to set and forget.

i believe Feral has kits to build your own adjustable struts, and i'm pretty sure these have a lock nut system. from what i've seen of feral's kit they're pretty simple to install, same idea as this but better !!

my mk2 escort has a similar coilver set up- but with a locknut. But when I unlock it and try turn the seat with a C spanner when the spring is still captive- it's impossible. I think the likelihood of the seat turning during use are slim to none.
I'm not saying you shouldn't still have the locknuts though!
