going to throw together a CA18DE+t over the holidays to put in my car for when i feel like being stealth and not having induction noise

surely you can handle an angle grinder, dont take that long to make....unless your trying to make it sit stupidly low like i did

if i had a drawing i would be set, i just know that things like this take a whole weekend to make when you are trying to drop the motor in and out and measure and all that

i guess i'll stick with the maddat idea

i'm looking for a quick conversion this time... having bits like this ready to go before the a-series even comes out is gonna save ages

i spoke to an engineer about dropping the centre of the crossmember like that and he was happy to have it done but he wanted 3mm steel plate spot welded on each side across the length of the "dipped' section and the ends of those plate to be round.

spot welded plates hey....might as well just get them fully welded on

took me about a half hour to make the mounts once i figured out how to get the engine low enough, just make cardboard templated and then transfer then to steel plate and trim to fit

would take half hour to get two coats of paint on...

seam welded tend to allow some flex/vibration etc. fully welded is too rigid and ends up with cracking of the welds. that goes for welding in general of beams etc which you would expect bending loads

hard to explain round ends.. but basically on the two ends rather than cut the ends of square have round (convex) cut offs, this removes any concentrated stress at the corners where it is welded to the crossmember i guess though i dont fully see why that's necessary

In this case I highly doubt that seam welding will be more effective than continuous welds. A car chassis perhaps is more effectively seam welded because they get noticeable amounts of twist and distortion on a regular basis.

I actually did an analysis on a standard crossmember in cosmos and the amount of deflection from extreme load situations was still a bees dick/

the best reason to do it...

cause the engineer wants it done that way

Although aren't you an engineer too? Does he listen to your opinion?

i choose not to argue for my own benefit, he was a fair bit older and last thing he is gonna want to engineer is some young smart arses car
