I love it... i have often thought that the lines on my 1000 (same as the red one pictured - but grey) are perfect for a chop top.

Also, the NRMA list a 1968 Datsun 1000 DeLuxe as having a mass of 632kg.

Yes itsa photoshop and to find someone in Melbourne to do it for me is next to impossible.. well and so is the weather anyway!
Every official datsun 1000 literature (factory manuals and 3rd party) and website info states 615 kg for the ute, 625 for the 2 door sedan standard, 645 for the deluxe.
The NRMA are a bunch of Testiccle heads.

Thanks to PAP bare engines special of $50 got a fiat 1800 twin cam and 5 speed. Also my mates 13b and 5sp . Engines need rebuilds so know I have to choose.
Easy rear wheel 200hp on the rotor or rwheel 140 for the fiat twin cam with no pollution gear and at halve the price of getting an a14,a15 to produce 120 rear wheel ponies.

Hey Perth 1000 freak you know who I mean can you get those engine mount pics or do I have to drive through the nullabour to get them or do I have to buy that 1000 ute 13b daily driver to get ideas

 Re: chop top 1000
I have sawn a 1000 in half [front cut] & now i know why they are so light. The strength of the body is shared by both the top [roof] structure & the sills. Take off the roof & you got nothing.

Th make it a ragtop [to "chop" the top is to lower the roofline, not remove it] you will need to strengthen the floor area to compensate for the very large degree of strength that will be lost.
Factory convertables of just about any make or model are usually the heaviest in the range for this reason.

 Re: chop top 1000
What if I used and integrated rollcage to act as the roof and weld up the door skins and have the tubing running through where the doors where??
Just picked up some doors from a wrecked 1000 and I tell you they are as heavy as my ke25 corolla doors!!! thats it intregrated rollcage and no doors!
Yes convertibles are heavier thats right because they have all the glass and strengthening, heavy retractable roof, beafier doors to handle better window mechanism so glass dont fall out.

However I might make the same weight or less as I dont want any glass, windscreen or doors, window mechanisms, latches, water squirter ;) and wiper mechanism, water bottle and other bits not mentioned that I might have missed.

I still want the oldskool datto look, as spartan as possible with even a front end like Stevos 1000 with the simple bolt on front guards and single tube L suports to the front rails.

Hey D hows's things? I have been thinking about this, what if you found an old registered clubman, and placed the chopped 1000 shell on top? You could still run the 1000 front end (or coilovers) and an a series, or gsxr 1400 engine, or whatever you like.

cheers

I like your thinking - keep an eye on Carsales.com.au I've seen (older) clubmans going for around $7K

No fake too, but Ive been planning to do it for a while since 1000 have squarish dimensions but money is the factor as I dont want the common box under car vw format.
I would never do it to your beast first cause its rare a hens teeth here and 1000s are more commonly found stashed somewhere or still putting around by old ladies as their beloved faithful.
As where yours is considered the lightest strut car datsun has built

Hello

My mum use to had a Datsun 1000.

I remember that it was very quick, sometimes I think that it could even be quicker than my B310.

It was around 600Kg, I think.

Are you saying that my car is light? I think it is around 750-800Kg.

Regarding structural reinforcement of the 1200 roadster I thinked about removing/covering the back seat with metal sheet and separating the two front seat, so it was possible to use a tubular frame.

Where are you from D?

Ricardo

I've looked at doing a few things with the 1000. I contemplated a targa top. Or full convertable. Though I was looking at using the coupe shell.
I'd say it could be done but it would require abit of re-inforcing.I haven't figured out how yet but I'm sure it could be done.

I knew of a subaru station wagon where they simply took the doors off and cut the top. You'd think it would have instantly collapsed from lack of support, but noooo ... they used it for mud runs on gravel logging roads.

Ricardo Im from Argentina originally and lived mainly in Oz and Japan. I gotta say your mums x taxi was a treat and yeas they weigh about 600. I thought the b110 sunny 2-door sedan weighs about 690kgs and even lighter without all the luxury items
Dattoman I suppose anything is possible but my budget doesnt say so.
It would b cheaper to buy a damaged sprite add a tilt front with a15 and dat running gear with redone electrics and datsun badges
As for the sub well Im the same thinking that just a tubular cage would be strong enough if the sills are raised with shorter doors.
Dreams sometimes remain dreams.

PS: Ricardo not only do u Portugueses hombres have the nicest sounding language but excellent english!

Muchas Gracias D. El castellano es precioso tambien. (I hope the spelling is correct).

My mums DATO went to the junkyard with a blown head gasket and a slipping clutch (very easy to repair, since I have changed it on my car by myself). It has been made in 1968 and sometimes I think that I have been a fool for not keeping it.
A car with 35 years today. It is very rare. I am with my eye on one of a oldman that lives near me. Someday I will get another 1000 (I hope).

Now it is too late. However, I learned my lesson and I will keep my B310 forever.

Muy bien! or should I say Motto bien?
If you get the 1000 from the old dude remember about the only thing youll need to change besides the monstrous engine is the balljoints and front brake setup.
You can use early mitsubishi sigma rotors, calipers and brackets, 1200 coupe master or la, lb lancer master and booster (as datto dave suggestions) and front hubs from 1200 coupe same bearings as 1000. You just need to machine 2 mm off the hub to fit the rotor disk and redrill the caliper bracket to angle 10-15 degrees from the tie rod.
Once you lower a 1000 it is the only car to feel like a go cart with a roof. They have a factory alloy diff carrier and the standard model weighs 625kgs but has no heater or passenger sun visor
You can run a smiths (ahhh english) electric heater with reamped alternator and the sun visor well its up to you
If you need any parts like Balljoints or other bits let me know we can get all parts in Oz.
How many cars have balljoints lasting 35 years?

"Muito bem"

I think I can get the balljoints around here because last year I replaced the ones of my B310.
The car is so light that the all around drum brakes seem to work perfectly. Moreover Portuguese law is very restrictive regarding modifications.

Shure the B310 has disk brakes.

I was talking (writing) about the 1000.
