Great Pics!

Read the history and latest facts about the Bakkie here: http://wiki.datsun1200.com/index.php/B140

Even in Japan -- made through 1994 -- they didn't come with EFI. Longbeds were sold new in New Zealand.

I've been hearing for *years* that "they are stop making them". This is the first time I've heard about the emissions reason though so maybe this time it is for real.

$14k AUD is fair, it would cost about that in USA (11k USD?) -- if they were sold here. Welcome to more emission controls. ZA has had them for some time but not like USA/Europe. Next up in USA: mandatory fuel economy restrictions (to reduce carbon dioxide emissions). Even our "zero emissions" engines (like Ford 2.3 liter) put out carbon dioxide CO2.

 Re: My Wife
Nissan is stupid and bullshit for saying things like pollution being an issue, just inject it with the old injection system with improved catalyc converter and computer software it would solve these issues and LPG also if available. I agree it should be cheaper since its an old model revamped, however cheap still for what it is. A wonderful car that no one has yet even today made better for its size and versatility. I hope it survives the stupid internal politics of nissan.

Even ultra cheap throttle injection would solve the emission issues.

Beautiful engine bay by the way and I like the pumped up roof.

 Re: My Wife
Those crazy emission laws are the same reason Ford Australia will no longer make the straight 6 4.0L engine...meaning no more turbo variant either.

It's too expensive to redo the engine calibration to meet the Euro 08 emissions so their just buying an engine from America already complying with the 08 emissions requirements.

Seems a bit over the top to me.....

I know AUD$14k sounds like a lot but when you consider a clean good example of a 70's model slightly restored fetches 8-9k it starts to sound cheap. Or you can purchase a proton jumbucket which will fall apart in a couple of years.

 Re: Pricing
Everything in South Africa is a rip-off these days. ####, event a cheap bottle of brandy is already R40.00. The goverment f--ked up the economy in the last 10 years. As for nissan, they could have relaxed the prices on vechiles that were first designed in the 60's

Yes, I agree, Nissan SA has been ripping us off for years, if you consider all the tooling jigs & pressings are all 1970's spec and paid for long ago. They will discontinue the production of this bakkie at the end of 2007 they say because we have to comply with international 1st world emissions control laws from 2008 onwards - in a third world country - go figure!
Cars in general in SA are one big ripoff, ever seen a poor car dealer (even if they sell CHANA or TATA)??

 Re: My Wife
It may be a bit expensive for you guys, but here in SA, its worth every cent. It is also the cheapest half tonner in SA, and the most reliable. Unlike Ford, Opel, Proton, VW and Fiat, that are more expensive. These pick-ups just run forever without any problems. My one, has got 52000km's on it clocks and the only problem ive had was a tyre problem.

 Re: My Wife
not say they arent good just saying Nissan is ripping you off. Its a lot of money for a datsun ute even if it is brand new.
Maybe if it had EFI 5spd and A/C and good brakes then ok....

I do do agree with "Converted" they are a bit pricey, but still the best on the market. Maybe we will get EFi some day, A/C is already an option.

 Re: My Wife
probably 10 years ago I saw 2 long bed 1200 utes in an import car yard here in Brisbane. Can't remember what year they were, but they weren't brand new. They had air con and EFI. can't remember if they were 4 or 5 spd though. Strange that they stayed with carbs and no air in South Africa. Must have no emissions laws over there eh?

Im unsure if we have emission laws here in SA, But I dont think we do.

The pick-ups that you saw might have come form Zambia, as they are still built there aswell.

See the following two links:

 Re: My Wife
i agree the front looks a bit different, although easily fixable, but i dare say that id much rather the slightly different loloking bakkie over the 1200 ute for the simple fact that evreything is brand new and will obviously go for much longer without hassles. hopefully one daysomeone will start doing local imports for them i cant begin to imagine how many of these would be sold in australia if they were able to be imported legally. i think its time the jumbuck copped a datsun bumjack !!!
