A friend of mine had told me to use this setup for emissions after I installed my Weber. In order to pass the air pump has to be hooked up and functional. Is it ok to have the air pump drawing from the check valve? I have'nt put the belt on and tested in yet, so I really need feedback. Thanks

Now that we know more about the smog pump system, time to revisit this ...

* INPUT of the pump comes from the FILTER (blue thing on fender)
* OUTPUT of pump goes to CYLINDER HEAD (check-valve at front of head)

In this photo it looks like it is connected backwards

Dodgeman, you're right about the way it is hooked up. I figured it was ok but I needed a second opinion from someone who has more experience than I. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it a lot. I also thought about putting an air filter on the air pump intake instead of hooking it up to the check valve (by the way, i just took "check valve" from my Haynes manual), I figured it might be a bit safer but my overall goal here is to pass emissons (I can't get a permanent license plate without it). I would love to eliminate the air pump together, but I cant pass emissions without it hooked up. Thanks Guys.

P.S - what happens if oil gets into the air pump?

If I guess correctly, the air pump is a vane type & is designed & built to pump clean filtered air. If you get oil in there it can eventually gum up the works. If oil passes into the exhaust ports directly, it can make smoke & carbon.
If the fumes are drawn directly through the PCV valve [positive crankcase ventilation] it is mixed in the manifold with the incoming gasoline charge & drawn into the cylinders where it is [allegedly] burned.

If the Inspector Nazi has any kind of savvy on how these things work, he might give you some grief, so removing his excuse to give you a hard time might be a good idea.

The important thing is the "anti-backfire valve", a safety feature of air pump system.

PCV system has two backfire safeties:
1. baffle in block where air pipe is
2. baffle in rocker breather hose ("flame arrester")

Here's a pic of that anti-backfire baffle in the rocker cover breather (this is a B110 part)

Define 'check valve'

From the photo it looks like you have a filtered air supply coming from the underside of the air filter, then to a 'T' piece that then feeds to the intake fitting on the top of the rocker cover [this is good] & also to what I presume to be the intake side of the air pump.

This should work, but if there are any oil laden fumes that make their way back from the rocker cover, say, if the engine is a bit worn, & you are struggling up Pikes Peak, then this oil wil be sucked into the air pump, which is probably not so desirable.

I suggest that either
1. A second fitting in the filter base plate be used to supply filtered air, or......
2. A separate filter for the air pump on the intake hose.

I'm just trying to suggest a way of keeping oil out of the air pump. If plan 1. is used, any fumes that make it to the air cleaner should be sucked down into the carb.

I usually plug the "check valve" dispose of the air pump altogether. 3/4 NPT plug does the trick.

My .02 cents
