I take exception that you would even think of mentioning a ricer when commenting on my datto... even though I put silver vent covers on... and they look a bit corny...

1200gxman nailed it right on. For the amount of driving I do I couldn't be bothered to have a heater in, it would have complicated my plumbing to much anyway.

Here is a crappy pic of the police vehicle request document one has to pull when trying to clear a vehicle. This was done as the previous owner declared it stolen, got it back, but never bothered to clear it before selling it to me. To cut it short, I had bucket loads of crap to get it legally registered in my name, but I did it.

Also you will notice that there is a "Usage" header, which says "Racing". Yes in ZA you can register a vehicle for racing use, and still legally drive it on public roads, to and fro events of course...

What might be of even more importance, is that there is also a "RW status", which reads "Exempt" in this case. This basically means it can have any modification whatsoever done to it, engine wise, rollcages, wheels, ride height and so forth, and it can still legally be driven on public roads, to and fro events... It also never has to go for roadworthy testing, but having built this car I can honestly say that I'm more than willing to take it for testing anytime, and I'm 100% sure it will pass the 1st time.

For the Exempt roadworthy status in ZA, is it intended for driving publicly "to and from events" only?

Here in WA we have "collector" registration. It costs a fraction of regular fees, but it states something similar to "to and from events" as well as puts a yearly limit of mileage allowed.

Yes, it's probably only for driving to and from events, but I never got any indication of where and how it might be driven, when registering and licensing it, so it's more of an assumption. However, my brother in law also has the 1200 sedan, and his license disk doesn't differ one bit from mine, there is no indication on the disk itself that it's for racing use. I would mostly only drive it to and from events anyway, but wouldn't be to worried about driving it to and from work every once in a while. There is tracks all around where I live, so I could literally always be driving to or from a track if I have to...

This license also only cost me R48, that's about $7 US or $8AUS. There was also no indication of any kind of limit on the mileage.

O, and I don't think there is anything wrong with the heater, and am holding on to it. If anyone needs one, or if I get old enough to be bothered by a bit of cold when wrenching it's b@ls, I might make use of it. There are a few holes that still need plugging in the firewall though, some very cold jets of air coming in there.

Does it get cold where you live?

Instead of covering the air vents, could you push the knob on the heater box in (box under the dash? That stops the airflow in my 1200.

Actually, pushing the knob IN allows fresh air into the cab, but pulling it out stops the flow of outside air, at least in Aussie models it does.

What's wrong with your heater? Hell, mine puts out so much heat you could almost make toast with it, & my mate complained that the one in my old 1200 ute was burning his leg if I turned it on full.
No need for vent covers if you have a serviceable 1200 heater.

EDIT
But then, you don't have a heater at all, do you.

Luckily I know kulula and can quickly comment.
As far as I know this car does'nt have a heater in it anymore. The unit was removed.
Yes, you read right. South Africa's car registration rules are not that strict as on your side. That is why I was lucky enough to have a ride in a road registered 2.2 litre turbo 1400 Nissan bakkie.
Kulula's car is actually also a road registered race car on his registration papers.
Lucky him.

The heater in my ute is the same as Dmans - toasty - toasty!!!

Even on cold mornings I have to shut it off and open a window every now and then.
