Nice! Can you take a pic of inside the bell housing of the clutch lever setup?

Cheers!

Another inovative conversion from the workshop of 'The Boss' It seems to work rather well too.

does this coversion require the tunnel to be widened?

Looks good. How did you go about sealing the front of the box seeing as the original toyota bellhousng has the seals built in?

If I remember rightly, the Toyo-yoyo bellhousing was also machined & the relevant parts liberated & sandwiched between the 56A bellhousing/adapter & the box itself.

Hopefully Aiden can confirm or correct my comment.

The original toyota release bearing guide was used, which has the seal incorporated into it. It had to be machined down to work with the datsun release bearing carrier, which itself had to be bored out slightly.

We had to cut the original gearbox mounts out of the tunnel, and we bashed it out a bit, but there wasn't too much involved in getting it to fit. It's actually easier to get in and out of the car than the 60 series we were using before due to the smaller bellhousing.

Nice job! I used a different method for mine...instead of turning down the Toyota guide and boring the datsun carrier, I used the stock Toyota guide and carrier but pressed on a Datsun bearing. Then I spend some time opening up the throw-out arm to work with the Toyota carrier. Your way sounds easier if you have access to a lathe. My way only required a grinder.

To fit it in a 1000 I used a bottle jack (side on) and two small bits of wood to slightly widen the tunnel. I think the original mounts are still there

Dragging up a semi old post here...

How did you mount the new x-member? Just into the floor with big washers? Also was the original 'rolla/celica x member used or a full custom unit?
Also how did you make sure the bell housing was the right length in relation to the input shaft? How much did you need to cut out?
What clutch setup is used(combo of parts?)

Looking into doing this soon!

 Re: 5 speed gearbox
We have pieces of flat plate on the inside floor that the bolts go through, that are welded into position and curved partway up the tunnel for extra strength. The gearbox crossmember is just a big piece of 8mm flat plate that bolts to the toyota gearbox mount. We just sat the gearbox in position with the jack and bent a piece of wire for a template and the bent the flat plate to match.

We measured the length of the bellhousing of a dellow kit and used that as our target length, I might be able to crawl underneath and give you a rough measurement a bit later.

The front casing of the 56a was cut through just behind the plate where the front bearings locate. The back plate of the toyota bellhousing where the seal housing/realease guide bolts to was cut off as well.

Then both parts were milled down on the sides that were cut until the correct overall length was reached. A sleeve was made in a lathe in order to centralize the two parts and then we got stuck in with the mig welder.

After that we chucked the whole lot in the lathe and turned out the input shaft hole in the 56a bellhousing so we could bolt the original toyota relase bearing guide onto the toyota section of the bellhousing.

The toyota release bearing guide was turned down and the datsun bearing carrier was bored out so they worked together. The rest of the clutch setup remains original datsun stuff.

The input shaft doesn't stick out past the bellhousing like in the datsun box, this means the spigot bush or bearing has to go into the flywheel.

Other than that its a nice simple job.

I'll get measurements later.

 Re: 5 speed gearbox
Righto so the overall length of the bellhousing is 167mm. The front part which comes off the 56 series gearbox is 150mm, and the toyota part at the back of the bellhousing is 17mm thick. Hope this helps. Remember the spigot bearing/bush goes into the flywheel, not the crankshaft, so don't be worried if it looks too long.

Cool thanks for that! What do you mean by you cut off some of the toyota housing/guide bolts? Is the gearbox flange untouched on the T50? and just the bellhousing cut to suit?

What combo of clutches did you use? Part numbers would be helpful if you have them.

 Re: 5 speed gearbox
Basically the back 17 mm of the toyota bellhousing was used with the front 150mm of the 56 series front casing. The gearbox which the bellhousing bolts to is un-modified. I probably over explained things in my previous post.

As for the clutch, we used the same pressure plate we were using for the 60 series and got a exedy clutch plate which had the same diameter as a datsun one but had the spline for the toyota input shaft. Don't have a part number as the cardboard box it came in has been thrown out and the clutch plate is buried inside my bellhousing, but i'm sure any decent clutch specialist could track something down for you.

I'm going to do the same thing with W50 box soon. I found 3-puck corolla clutch plate which has 21 splines/24 mm center (the same as W50 shaft) and the diameter is 180mm as it is in datto. So the basic idea is that you find a clutch plate with suitable center and diameter. You can also use non-datto pressure plate and consequently different (wider) clutch plate.

not really, all that i needed to do to fit the dellow kit was remove the original gearbox mounts and it needed a tiny bit of massage where the firewall meets the gearbox tunnel. i didnt have to widen it any around the gearbox case though.
although this particular one pictured here may fit well due to using the a series bellhousing.
