That is a coolant temperature-controlled switch.

The purpose depends on the year and model of your vehicle.

P.S: it is the Left side of the engine. With cars right and left terms are as viewed while sitting in the car.

If this was a front wheel drive Pulsar, that would have been the right side...

PS. What is actually cool about this picture, is that it shows the resiliance of the A series engine. Most of the metal parts, and some of the alu parts are showing oxidation, but it's probably still running like clockwork, and will for many years to come...

Its obviosly not a fan switch as you can see the solid fan, and My guess is that its an a12 as the intake manifold dosent go any higher then the exhaust manifold.
