Looks pretty much identical to an A12 in the front.

 Re: A10 Engine, front
So it should since the A12 was little more than a stroked A10. The main changes were a raised deck block to accomodate the additional 11mm of stroke, & an additional two main bearings. Provision was also made for drawing out the crankcase fumes from left side rear of the block into the PCV valve.

The A10 was an almost perfect design for its intended purpose & the inclusion of the PCV system that was incorporated into the later engines would have seen 'perfection achieved'. Because of the very short stroke [59mm] & large crank journals for an engine of this size, the 3 bearing crank was amazingly stiff, so an extra 2 main bearings would have added only to the cost, the complexity, & the internal drag, but not to performance or reliability.

That front pulley is of great interest to me.

I read with interest your comments Dodgy, for road use i agree fully on reliability.
For sustained big revs in competition however, the 3 mains set up was far from ideal, much like the early MGA 3 mainers.

Over the early years i lost two engines due to the main bearing death rattles using the best oil and coolers available at the time.....however never a sign of trouble with the 5 mains pulling upwards of 8.5

Even today we see the odd untouched 1200 motor come in 35 odd years old and god knows how many k's never been opened....and with bearings good enough to put back in!!

The extra 2 bearings was a good move and the Japs got it right creating immortality, had they not i doulbt this site would exist.
