Re: F5C56 5-speed gearset Fifth gear is direct drive. First gear is in the extention housing with reverse. Input shaft [17] is coupled direct to the main shaft [57] via the locking collar & synchro hub [58 & 59] when 5th is selected.
The gears numbered [5] on the input shaft, & [5] on the cluster are the constant mesh, or primary drive. This simply provides drive to the cluster.
All of the intermediate forward gears are constantly in mesh & are coupled to the mainshaft when required via the synchro hubs & collars.
