This is the CA16DE mock up engine. The "good" CA16DE goes into it when finished.

Hey D, you using the entire CA20E block & internals? Any idea what cam belt will fit the CA20DE?

OK, i am picking up on this thread again. I don't know where the injection throttle bodies are from, but they are commercially available.

Whats the problem with using a cat converter? There are come really serious cars out there that run them without any real problems. I plan to run one on my coupe,... being environmentally responsible y'know. I guess that they might be a problem if they were a bit small, & one was using a whizz wheel air compressor, but i'm going for the suction method of fuel delivery, & suitable sized converters are readily available.

Hey Chris,

Can we have an update on this car? I am seriously considering it as an option for later down the track for the KB10 and want to know how it has gone. I have been speaking to the guy that built my car about 10 years ago and he said that he was about to do it when he sold the thing. Apparantly it almost bolts up to the datto 4spd, and is quite easy to do. They are cheap as chips (about $350) and comply with class rules. How has this one gone?

I am at liberty to say only that this car is progressing steadily.

Trouble is that the old car keeps geting quicker all the damn time, so this one has no real priority to get it finished, but it is steadily progressing none-the-less. It still looks substantially like this although a great deal of work that is not readily obvious has been done to the rest of the car.

As mentioned several times in this thread, the engine will bolt up to a Datsun five speed OK, but one from behind a CA series engine, like the CA20E in the series 3 Bluebird.
Use this gearbox case & fill it with a stumpy gearbox from a Skyline & you will have a gearlever that comes out very close to the original position in the floor.

Personally, I do not expect to even see the engine running during this year.

This engine, & the good engine that will replace it, are from front drive cars, like an EXA for example. This one has a gearbox from a series 3 Bluebird [910] with the CA20 engine.
For race use, it will be OK, but for street use, it isn't so good as the gear lever comes out just at the front of ther hand brake lever, which means that this needs to be moved. The practical swap is the stumpy box into the CA20's gearcase job. This puts the gear lever half a hole further back, which is much better to live with.

The manifold was made by the simple expedient of machining away all of the material that was not needed, & welding on a plate to mount the individual throttle bodies & induction trumpets. The means of geting all of this to run is a black art, & the work of Sorcerers with computer savvy & a private dyno.

There has been no further work on this one as he has a business to run, plus there have been a few minor problems with the regular racer, requiring fitment of the spare engine, repair & further development of the race engine, refitting of this good engine, then rebuilding the spare engine to bring it up to par with the good engine, so that there would be a seamless transition from one engine to the other. Just to share the wear you understand.

It sounds like you need to buy several engines just to source enough parts to build what you need. If that's what it takes, then go for it.

We look forward to its progress so well be here waiting its birth. As well as your big block a12

Well with my 1k I want to keep the earlier pre 86 serial number to eliminate the cat for starters.
The exercise is to try and get an engine that has OHC (or DOHC) crossflow, 2ltrs and has a wide option of 5 speeds available. This is along with pre86 specs of no catalyc converter and able to run twin 45s, bigger cams and exhaust to give the 1k have more oomph than I can afford with a worked a-series, renault gord, fiat tc or blood curdling rotor.
If the ca20 with pollution mode tune makes 98hp then what can be done to make this cheap engine make more by using parts available from the ca range and still keeping it a budget oldskool build?
The ca20 rods wont handle much abuse I hear so what can I use to maybe replace these like ca18de ones? or other nissan ones?
It would be nice to deck the ca20 if its taller to help for clearance and also increase the factory 8.6 to 1 compression, make the block lighter (2-4 pounds?) and helping clearance of course in the 1k.

I figure the ca would be a better proposition than a NA E15 as its already got the dizzy in the right position, cubes, its rwd with many avail gearboxes, has twin cam head avail and more budget development potential....
Also it would be better than an L series (sorry Harry) as a TC head is available cheaper and easier than an LZ special.

I can do a CA20 with a CA18DE head. The oil and coolant galleries match rite up....np

The only diffrence is that the CA20's crank has 8 bolts on it to attach the flywheel, while the CA18 and 16 twincams have 12.......so you'll have to use a CA20 flywheel.......or a RB20.....

the Result? A twin cam CA20DE.......If you want pics, PM me

And I live in Austalia....so I can't build one and send it to the states...."

Also found that 23% better flow can be achieved with 2mm larger exhaust valves and a little cleaning up of the ports.

anymore info anyone....?

Sorry, been working away for a few days, & will be away for another week starting monday.

I have been refering to these cars for a while, but i recently parted with about $800 for a new digital camera & stuff, [it's a good one] so now i am able to produce some images.

The box is series 3 Bluebird [1985 & on, model 910] This meant that there is now a hole in the floor about 4" back from the original for the "ratio selection controller"

The inlet manifold (the part with the injector bosses) looks quite sophisticated for a homemade part. Nice job.

The manifold part that you refer to is derived from a production part. It's a stock induction that has been heavily modified. Even the injector bosses will not be used.

Re: At my local service station [Scabby coupe
Ok Ive finally gone sane and got rid of the $50 dollar pick a part specials gathered earlier: renault 70kg 1700cc gordini, the 123kg fiat 1800cc twin cam and friends 130kg s5 13b 6 port rotary. The winner is the engine above "the ca16".
Now to find one is the other story but the first were in production in carb form and in SOHC since 1979!!!!!! which means they dont need catalyc converters and can be fitted with twin webers or other beautiful setups like above (if dodge would pm me the secrets to it homemadeness??? ;))) and just run a carbon canister. The goofy thing is that the twin cam head would be a bolt on and still no catalyc converter..thank you Nissan I almost lost faith in ya!
I also need to know which box to run to use the best ratios and by the looks of it many boxes can be candidates specially the 280zx from dates 9/79 to 84 they have the best close ratios with a 3.074 first and .7 final or fifth gear and the bellhousing comes off to fit the ca20 one from what Ive read.
The earlier ca16 also has a dizzy so I wont need to run an ignition computer as in the later crank angled sensor ones but yet to know where the dizzy is located as these early ca16 engines are very rare.
Would love to know the deck height of the ca16,18 and 20 to see if any differences and then just use the ca20 with ca18 internals and head.
Any info anyone??? or any further work done above to Dodgemister??

Two reasons
A. Class restriction
B. East Keilor Wreckers were selling them in pairs at less than $200 Au/ pair at the time [plus freight]

At last, someone else who's done it...
He wont be disappointed....

I'm building the evolution version of my first effort at this, I was so impressed first time around....
