Hi Guam_Guy, the Z18T was never used in any american-model Datsuns. But some came in as "used" import engines. You might be able to find a used one somewhere if you watch the online ads every day. I saw one at the Portland Swap Meet one year during the 80s.

Why does the Z18 have twin spark plugs for each cylinder? is it to help combustion or some reason which involves the turbo? i wonder...

Z-type engine series used twin spark plugs to help with emissions control, called "NAPS-Z".

Speaking of sticking motors into 180b's, I did an approximate measure and found that there's an extra 2" between strut towers on a 610 vs. a 510.

You'd need a custom bonnet.
They are a tall engine.

Plus you'd have trouble fitting the radiator.

Chris.

ps. Get a CA18DET...

 Re: z18 turbo
like the pic says, it's actually a Z18. Not an L series, but very closely related. The bottom end is basically identical, with a different (x-flow) head. smaller brother of the Z20 dimlight has in the chickenhawk.

L20B will fit under a standard 1200 bonnet easily in terms of height. Lengthways its a bit tight, but fitting the radiator in isn't a prob. you'll need a thermo fan in front of the radiator (ie on the grill side)

And yes, it will go hard in a 1200 ute, even with just a little tweaking.

 Re: z18 turbo
Z18's and L-series are very closely related, it is possible to put a Z head on a L-series bottom end with the use of the Z24 front cover. Z18's are a top little motor i had one years ago they are a tough little unit and are dirt cheap. As for L-series in a 1200 ute, a L20 will fit (and will clear the bonnet) a bloke i know used to have a 1200 ute with a webered L20 in it and it used to run high 12's slicked up.

Nah not that wild (had forgies in it), had nitrous on it too. I might have forgot to mention that, funny that. Only 75hp shot in third gear and up but thats enough. This car was stolen a couple of years ago and the guy that pinched it died in it trying to out run the coppers. Fairly easy but strong set up L20, 260Z 5 speed and a Hilux diff all wrecking yard stuff. He had problems with the bores in the L-series turning into ovals due to too much pressure (compression & nitrous), he found that the imported L-series blocks (ie 200B SSS) or series 2 blueys were the best.
