Re: Head bolt info What you see above is the entire chapter on head bolts in the 1974 book. The assumption at the time [1974] is that new parts would be used i guess. As for me, i am trying for the ARP stud kit.

Re: Head bolt info A-series head bolts are re-usable. Many newer style engine have non-reusable head bolts, that are installed with a stretch factor.

Re: Head bolt info But would you retorque a bolt thats been in the engine for 30years? I know I'd feel a lot better putting new bolts in.

Re: Head bolt info hehe 12month tuneup, I dont think I've ever had a motor that long :P
What I mean is most that I've seen are pretty rusted and I wouldnt want to snap one when I'm putting it back in when I could have all new ones for not too much money.

Re: Head bolt info Are these supposed to be some special non-standard bolt, coz all the ones I'm looking to replace have '13' on them

Re: Head bolt info If the '13' looks to be like the illustration, then you already have the good blots. This is what they used in the high performance engines, so perhaps you are about to save yourself a few dollars. Where did you get these bolts from? If you removed them from an original unmolested engine, then you may have an original GX engine to start with.
I will try to post a photo of one of my GX bolts for comparison.

Re: Head bolt info Save myself a few dollars? how? and its not an original unmolested engine, by the looks of it, the head's been off more than a few times.

Re: Head bolt info I have been reading these head bolt threads and it is very interesting, but there seems to be a focus on if the bolts head says 13 then the bolts are instantly good. Does the "Factory Competition tune up manual" give a specific measurement for overall length and maximum stretch of these head bolts? One thing to remember is, over years of use or even if they have been torqued down too much at one point in time, The bolts can stretch and their strength is reduced. This is a main reason why head bolts are often replaced.

Re: Head bolt info I think all A-series engines from mid-1972 may have the "13" bolts (or stronger). See the head bolt torque specifications in the Tune-Up Information article.

Re: Head bolt info I think you're right dd, as I wrote in the other head bolt post, all my A15s have had the 13 bolts in them.
