This is my 56A five speed for those who haven't seen one before.

The four-speed version of this is the standard gearbox. The 5-speed was competition-only or in the rare GX-5 model.

This is the 'direct-in-fifth' dogleg box & it shares the main trans case with some other 56A four speeds. Both first & reverse are in the extention housing which looks to be a gravity casting, while the main case is a pressure die casting.

I switched the rear seal to a 1000 one to make it compatible with my 1000's tailshaft yoke arangement.

These boxes don't have a great reputation for strength behind the larger motors, but they do fit the smaller tunnels in 1000's & a busted gearbox is more a reflection on the drivers ability, than on the box itself. I have used this one for about 15 years. With a nice 'life extending' major overhaul, it should last long enough to become part of my deceased estate.

Respect your Datsun. Treat it well.

P.S. The hose? A vent line that i ran away to a cleaner place than the dusty underside of the car.
The colour? I was not able to find the original Datsun engine blue, so i used some leftover Chrysler engine blue that i had. The trans was looking a bit ordinary, so i painted that too.

You've got it good. Chrysler blue is near impossible to get here,

Dodgeman,

If you want to keep sh1t and dirt out of your gearbox breather just run the vent tube up into the engine bay and put a disposeable fuel filter on the end of the hose. Cheap and easy insurance especially for us rally guys that run the risk of the gearbox sucking a gut full of water when doing water crossings etc.

Paul.

Thanks for the info, it's a really good idea. I was thinking about running a hose up to the engine air cleaner. That would save a little space & look a little tidier. But i f don't do that, then your idea is what i will do.

looks like they run the straight tubular rear main seal like the 1000's as opposed to the 1200 variety that come out to a big cup on the end
