This was the gap between Michael and the Sierra at the start and it didn't change more than a few feet for the entire race. The sierra was Tony Longhurst's old group A touring car. This is one of 'those mements' that makes it all worth the effort!

That looks like turn 11 at Eastern Creek.
Id say at those lap times either the guy in the Sierra couldnt drive or there was something wrong with the car.
Most normally aspirated under 2 litre Improved production cars can do that time.
I would expect the Sierra to be doing at least a 1.46 around the creek. With the wick turned up it would be into the high 39's

If you remember when cams banned turbos running in the supercar series tony longhurst & paul morris still ran non turbo sieras.
So was that car one of his turbo cars or a N/A.
But it still should be a quick car even if it dosnt have the origanal engine.
Great shot by the way.

Haha, obviously the car can go quicker! I haven't spoken to the new owner myself but apparently the tyres were very old...something like 5 to 10 years old. They could even be old unused group A tyres from yesteryear.

The new owner should be very proud of his new car and its completely understandable if he never pushes the car to his or its limit ever again - its a piece of australian motoring history.

...but its sure nice to have a photo like this and a timesheet to make interesting convo's.

Does anyone know what times these sierras were doing at Eastern Creek in their heyday ?? 1:40 to 1:45 sounds about right to me.

He also told Michael that he had just installed an ex-Moffat turbo, so it could have been a late model NA version.

It would be great if a modern "back to the future" Bathurst race was run yearly.
The old cars could run anything to 6 litres in NA or Turbo with multiplication
of 3 X so 2 litre engined cars would be same as 6 litre NA.
Allowances for turbo technology, suspension, gearbox and brake upgrades.
Tunnel and wheel arch mods allowed but must retain same type of engine not original
but same coding and type eg. 4age can use 7age block, a10 can use any A series etc.
Then you would have a racing class that would save alot of old cars and be more
affordable. However no 4wd or vehicles that didnt compete in at Bathurt 1000/500.

Great photo. Great story.

Yet another good reason why Dattos are great.

I'd love to own one of those Sierras though.
I wonder how much they'd cost. You'd obviously need to "be in the know" to get your hands on an ex-touring car.

Sorry for the off-topic part of my response

Thats not an off topic its appreciation for an inferior and overly expensive car!

imagine the 1k with powerteks new v8 2.6 ltr engine. 372hp and about 95kgs (a15 weight)

http://www.powertecracing.com/v8_index.php

at 32000 au it will still eat the sierra.

IMO there is nothing inferior about the Sierra Cosworths. they are / were a highly sucessful racing machine around the world. I'm not particuarly a FORD fan, but I would gladly own / drive one of these babies. The sound at full noise across the top of the mountain [Mt Panorama, Bathurst] was just awsome.
I remenber way back when they first hit the scene in australian racing. They certainly upset the V8 camp.
I do recall the sierra's being a real handful in the wet as boost would come rather violently, and they just loved to step out.

great shot BTW.

Benny

You asked for it Dave, so here it is!
Umm...maybe what I said in the description isn't so accurate. I should be noted the gap changed quite a bit down the straight, but the lap times were similar.
The best laps times for the day were 1:55.913 for the Sierra and 1:56.606 for Michael.
