 Re: 1000 coupe diff
Just to add a little interest to the conversation, this is an Australian brochure page from a Sydney based dealer. The relevant point is in the transmission section, last mentioned item in this section, where it says 'Final drive ratio'.
Remember that this brochure covers four door sedans, coupe's & five door wagons.

With so many B10 dif's [alloy with 4.11 to 1 ratio] showing up in 1200 wagons, then maybee it's true that they were being fitted by the state distributors, or even at dealer level, but whatever the reason, it would seem that they were not fitted at the factory, as the production 4.11 to 1 diff at this time used an iron carrier.

With the extra weight of the wagon body, & its intended load carrying ability, the lower ratio seems like a bloody good idea.

The standard ratio for the VB10 diff was 4.375 to 1, however a 4.625 is listed as an option. All had an alloy carrier.

 Re: 1000 coupe diff
Steve (phunk) gave me a spare diff that he had, a h145 from a 1200. This was a huge help, because it sorted out the brake troubles and i now have an unlocked centre to wack in for rego . Then I will have the locked for racing, so that should be good. Bit off topic but the plan is to have it ready by July (when I turn 17). To re-connect the demister, I need to run 2 pipes to the fan under the dash and back. There are 2 blocked off pipes near the radiator water enterance. Is this where they connect?

Thanks, Ian

That was jolly nice of him to help you out like that. Thats what this forum is all about,... helping each other.

One heater hose connects either to a 'T' in the middle of the lower radiator hose [original configuration] or to a fitting that feeds into the coolant inlet pipe at the front of the engine. [where the radiator hose attaches] Later engines used this system & allows you to do away with the 'T' fitting in the hose.
The other heater hose runs to a fitting on the back of the head.

There were two air hoses that ran from an oval shaped duct on each side of the original heater, up to the nozzled that directed the air from the heater onto the windscreen. These are mostly decomposed & collapsed by now & I don't know what to use as a replacement, so perhaps someone can help out here.
I was fortunate to find a pair of new ones in amongst the pile of parts that I bought for my sedan over a 20 year period, but never used, so being a packrat pays off sometimes. I'm still finding stuff I had forgotten about.

P.S. The lower plug in the photo [drain plug] looks to have a lot of thread showing, so it might pay to check it for tightness.

 Re: 1000 coupe diff
Well I thought it was time I gave a bit of an update. The exhaust is now back on. It is pretty restrictive but is only until I get rego.

The handbrake cable is ready to be welded up on the weekend, with all the cutting and bits ready.

The inside has been painted white and the new seats are screwed in (also only until rego).

And the front end damage is all fixed up. I learnt a fair bit about panel beating through that exercise.

Now I just need to fix a bit of rust to get rego. Then I can bring it home and do little fiddley jobs in the driveway. I cant wait! I will try to get some photos on the weekend.

Cheers, Ian

 Re: 1000 coupe diff
looking through the other comments about the car, somebody says it's a h145.it looks too
big to be a h145,looks more like a h165 to me.also, from the pictures of the rear end,the width is close to standard.you also say it has an
alloy 4.11:1 ratio.all indications are that this is the rear end from a datsun sports car from the mid sixties, called the sports 1600,or spl311.my
1000 came with exactly this rear end, with the alloy 4.11 plus the solid rod handbrake.i shattered an axle the first time i ever did a racing start,so replaced it with a 1200 ute housing with a 4.9:1 diff ratio.i then had to run front wheel drive wheels to get the tyres back under the guards.the 4.1:1 diff ratio went back into it when i sold the car, which it is still running.

 Re: 1000 coupe diff
i guarantee you its an H145 diff!!!!!!!! and its a 4.11 STANDARD 1200 wagon alloy carriered diff centre. i counted the teeth when it was out 37:9. and i just looked in my manual and it says that they all have this ratio.

the centre came from my 1200 wagon and the housing is the standard 1000 coupe item. same as all the others i've seen, i even have a spare!

why does everyone think this diff is so special?

 Re: 1000 coupe diff
sorry to hijack this thread, but does that mean a 1200 ute diff will fit under a 1000 coupe? And is there any benefit to doing this swap?
I have found a 1200 ute at the wreckers, and aparently the body is rusty but the running gear is ok. Is it worth scoring the diff? And is anyone chasing any parts? I could look for you.

Ray

 Re: 1000 coupe diff
the ute diff will fit but is wider than the thousand diff and will require a front wheel drive offset rim to still squeeze under the guards and i would think the mounting points would need to be moved to match the 1000.

benefit is that they are the bigger H165 and therefore stronger, but you only need that if you have enough power to trouble the H145

 Re: 1000 coupe diff
Ray the 1200 ute diff is too wide to use under a 1000, I bought one and a brand new Nismo H165 LSD to go in it before I got out the tape measure and discovered the awful truth.

EDIT, what Lagwagon said is true it will probably work with front drive offset rims, but I hate the poxy bastards and wanted to stick with my deep dish Watanabes.

The mounting points are a good match as I recall.

Thanks,

I just realised I should have just typed H165 into the search bar instead of asking the question here. Sorry to annoy anyone, but thanks again guys for the speedy reply.

Dont worry about it Ray , often times its a bit hard to find out 1000 specific info.

And getting back to this thread , what is the ratio for the 1000 wagon alloy carrier diff?
